No Slacking Allowed!

In case you all thought I have been slacking, I promise...I have not!!

I've designed a block for Paintbrush Studio's New Block Hop (coming March 28th - 30th) and made a quilt with said block.

I'm in the process of participating in 'March Madness', also a Paintbrush Studio event.  This is going to be fun...imagine March Madness with fabric as the teams!  My kind of fun!

I ransacked my stash, such as it is, and feel the need to throw it all in a quilt.  That I haven't done yet, but it is going to happen!

Instead I decided to use up some Feed Sack fabric.  My tub runneth over and frankly...I'm not as into them as I once was.

I didn't make much of a dent, but it wasn't for lack of trying!  The quilt had to be a fast finish, something I could power through without much effort and time.  We all like quick finishes!

I wanted a good mix of colors, something that would all work together, and a rainbow seemed the perfect choice.  I got all my squares cut and ready.  For some reason I cut them at 5 1/2", when I maybe should have gone with the basic Charm size of 5".  Maybe next time?!

I've always liked these little prints with white, they stand out more and it makes for a nice clean design.

I pulled out the Kona white and began the quick process of strip piecing.  Really fast, really simple and in no time at all they were ready for the next step.

One good thing about wonky blocks, you don't have to have them perfect.  The plan is to give a good 'wonk' to them!

While I did pick a rainbow of color, I had no intention of making a rainbow in the design. It just happened like that.  You know how it goes when you don't have a concrete plan...things just happen.

I've decided I will make a tutorial on how to make the blocks/quilt.  My way of giving a simple square that wonky goodness!

Do you think I should modify the pattern for charm squares?  We sometimes don't know what to do with our charm squares and it's always nice to find new way to use them up!

  1. Hi Jayne! This is beautiful! I don't use often charms but they are great. If you make the pattern it might be wished to be for charms. x Teje

    1. The fabric just needed to be used and gone! It hadn't occurred to me when I started this quilt to go with a standard size and charm squares would be perfect for it!

    1. I think many of us have charm squares that sit around. This would be a good pattern for those and then maybe we would finally use them up!

  4. Doing it for charms makes more sense since they are so readily available and often awkward to use in an attractive way. Somehow I don't picture you as a feedsack kinda gal, but the quilt is real cute.

    1. Yes to Charm Squares! I'm not really a feedback kinda girl any more! Although there are some quilts that I love using them, I just was in the mood to deplete my stash!

  5. Love this fun little quilt! My vote is to use charms as well. I've received many charm packs in swaps and I've even bought some that I loved but had no idea how I would sew them up. This would definitely take care of at least a few! Thanks for sharing!

    1. I think this design would be great for charm squares. While I used feed sack fabric, it would be great with any print or solids too!

  6. It's so sweet and simple, love that! Personally I think doing it with charms would be a good idea, since there are 42 sqs in a charm most of the time.

    1. Very simple and quick too! We all like that once in a while, right? It's hard knowing what to do with precuts, and this design would work perfectly for charms!

    1. I have trouble knowing what to do with all precuts. It's always wonderful when we find a pattern and can finally use them up!

  9. Writing a pattern for precuts can be a really great idea - I definitely struggle to use them myself. I think the quilt top came together wonderfully and I hear you about not making the expected dent in your stash...

    1. I'm at the point of being fed up with my stash! Any precut stumps me actually! Hopefully this will at least give a little inspiration to those who have a hard time with precuts as well!

  12. This is adorable. Like the rest of your commenters, I have stacks of charms. I often cut 5" blocks with my scraps to keep things manageable.

  15. I really hope you do make a tutorial. I have no idea how you did that… Hmmm. Do you cut them wonky after you sew the white strips to the center squares? I can't wait to see… :)

  21. Jayne, there are many adjectives that come to mind when I think of you. Show-Off :-) is one. But Slacker? No way. Your quilt is simple but beautiful and colorful. Kudos to you that put your not-favorite fabrics to great use. And that you will also write a tutorial fit for charm squares. See that is why I call you an Overachiever!!!
    Keep doing, keep inspiring, Jayne!!!
