Fall Flavor

Fall is in the air ~ everywhere!  Along with the leaves changing to brilliant orange, red and yellow, the weather is rapidly changing as well.  Crisp mornings and chilly evenings.  Around here it has been one big rain-fest for days!  One big soggy mushy mess!

That being said, I wanted to take a photo of this quilt among the quickly changing trees.  I can picture it nestled over a branch and surrounded my fall foliage, but mother nature is not going to allow that anytime soon!

I'm back to my Kaffe Fassett woven stripes!  This time I will finally use the newest of new colors.

With the older woven stripes I seemed to always go with Kona Khaki or a Chocolate brown. These new colors screamed for something more.  Something different.

I thought about it for a second and knew that Kona Storm would be the chosen one.  It's a beautiful deep, dark and rich color and it paired well with the autumn colors of the stripes.

Some of you may recognize this pattern, 'My Guy', which I've used it in several quilts before. I saw it years ago in an issue of American Patchwork & Quilting (June 2009) and it immediately drew me in.  It makes a wonderful masculine quilt and is perfect with woven stripes.  I use the pattern for reference only.  I like to make the blocks bigger or mix sizes.

Plus...it goes together fast!  Who doesn't love a quick quilt?!

For the quilting I went with straight lines and waves.  Nothing fancy, but it works for this quilt and for me!

I tried to get a good picture of the entire quilt with not much success!  I'm telling you...the weather is not helping at all!

Because I had the stripes out...I decided to delve into the 'COOL' side of things!  This one will be much larger.  I'm using Kona Shadow for the background, I've changed the size of the blocks (again) and I'm using two different widths.

When a design/pattern works for me I seem to go back to it time and again.  And, if I'm looking for a 'quicky'...you can bet this one is at the top of the list!

I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in this kind of thinking!  Do you have a 'Go To' design?  The perfect 'Quick Quilt' you like to make?

    1. I've had the Kona Storm for so long, just waiting for the right project to use it in! Actually, I have bought it several times but never used it! Making a quick quilt helps in the productivity department!

  2. These both look great! The blue was a perfect choice. And I hate it when the weather won't cooperate, too. Doesn't it know we have pictures to take? :)

    1. Kona Storm may be my favorite dark blue of Kona and especially with these fall stripes!

  4. I have two large bags full of Kaffe stripe fabric. This quilt is definitely going on my list. Love the Storm with those oranges. I think most of my stripes are in the blues and purples. Nice work!

    1. Usually I mix all the colors together, this time I thought I would try something different! I love the orange and storm combination a lot. The blues, greens and purples I thought would look good with grey. I was hoping it would be more 'Ice' like, but not so much! You must use those stripe Cynthia!

  6. What a gorgeous quilt, Jayne!!! Congratulations.
It is pretty and fast - just what a man wants :-)
Looks like all the striped fabric I have been hoarding is going to meet my rotary cutter soon.

  7. This looks absolutely sensational on a dark background... and talk about a quick turn around!?! Sometimes I'm feeling all proud of myself that a quilt is coming together and almost finished after a year - well not anymore!

Hmmm... I'm actually the type that when it's done, I'm glad to get it off my desk so I don't have to look at it anymore! I would have a tendency to want to try a pattern that I've not done before, but I suppose that could change the longer I quilt.

    1. The Kona Storm with these stripes is amazing! I am in love with it! Making quilts is what I do … all day… nearly every day. I remember when I had a 'real' job, it was hard to get a quilt finished in a timely manner!

  11. Wow, I've never been a Kaffe Fasset fan - but I LOVE this! The colors are so beautiful against that blue. And it looks like a really fun block to make, too. You're also dead on about the masculine look.

    1. I have always love Kaffe stripes, and had tons of older fabric. A couple years ago my daughter bought me a good variety of the newer and brighter stripes for mothers day! It took me long enough to use them! The combination of the blue and oranges…so gorgeous!

  12. They are both beautiful - you could send them to me, we have fall foliage for another week or two..... but I'm not sure you would get them back - Ha ha! Great pattern!

  15. I'm really surprised about the Kona Storm. It's not a color I would have put with those striped fabrics but it looks wonderful. And the quilting is great with this pattern. I don't have a go-to pattern but I really like how quick and easy this one would be. Might have to try something like this in a baby blanket size.

    1. Funny you should say that about making it into a baby quilt! I have some extra blocks from the blue/grey quilt and will be making it into a baby quilt! I wouldn't want them to go to waste! The Kona Storm is gorgeous and it paired well with the stripes.

  17. First of all, I think of the beach when I look at the first stripe with Kona Storm.( It could be that the local quilt store there stocks these stripes, but I've never given them a try.) The one big thing with the Kaffe fabrics is they feel so soft--a lighter weight fabric for sure. I have always wondered how well they would hold up to multiple washings and wear. I imagine the combination of lighter quilting with soft fabric makes this a luscious quilt to drape over you!

Thank you SO much for listing the names of the Kona colors you're using. It makes such a difference seeing them used in a quilt vs. just a swatch. I have been known to search out bloggers I know who've listed them, but now I'll just come back here!

    I love your style, Jayne!

    1. The woven stripes are light weight. I use starch when working with them during the piecing which helps initially. They can be tricky to quilt. It's hard to keep them perfect! The color combination makes up for it in my mind! I've never had any issues with multiple washings, they wear well!

I try to include names of the colors I use. There was a time when I didn't keep track of fabric names/colors and still have a few unidentified ones lingering!

  20. Absolutely beautiful - I had seen this on Flickr and wondered what the stripey fabric was. Thanks also for naming your solid - that maybe the perfect colour for my AMH quilt I want to do.

  22. Ooh! I just love how the quilting on this gives it such wrinkly goodness!!! My favorite fabrics!

  23. Love it, love it, love it! The stripes look like pieced sections. That blue is bang on... though I likely wouldn't have chosen it. I would have gone neutral and safe! :) Don't even get me started on the quilting. Wicked good.

  24. Thank you for assisting in my search for masculine quilts! I will be pinning this one - I'm thinking plaids in place of stripes...great color choice, Jayne.

  25. I like that Kona Storm! Must get some... I also like the Kona Shadow-- I usually go to Kona Snow. This is a super quilt, and as I've got every issue since 1998 or something of AP&Q, I am going to go grab it. There is definitely something about a fast and fabulous quilt...I may have made ahem several over the past few months for seniors in wheelchairs. :-) Masculine feel most definitely, something I had to be sure to do with the wheelchair ones.
