And they did eventually become one! Along with a mixture of Shot Cottons and Kona Shadow for the background!
I used EQ7 to create a few different triangle shapes and printed the paper piece templates out. Paper piecing is especially easy when it's a simple shape like these are.
These templates will ensure each block will be perfect. Which was important for when I pieced two of the same blocks together to make a one diamond block.
I wish I had taken 'in progress' pictures, but when the idea for this design came to me, I went in to a frenzy and before I knew it...it was nearly finished! The only picture I have is a bad picture I posted on Instagram!
I hope to use this same idea for a quilt. Still working on that idea! I may make the blocks into one diamond instead of two triangles. And I was thinking maybe I would try the freezer paper method. Has anyone tried that? I found the tutorial from Becca @ Bryan House Quilts. It looks promising!
I went a little crazy with the quilting. Straight lines, coordinating threads...you, fun stuff!
A stripe across the back for extra 'oomph'.
I found that while this isn't exactly pastel, I loved working with this color palette. It was a welcome change and I felt like I stretched myself. I know that sounds totally ridiculous!
And to be honest, chartreuse isn't exactly a pastel color!
Is there a color combination you are afraid to try? Or want to try? I would love to use these colors again, maybe with a different background. No idea what that would be and most likely...it'll be grey!

DeleteI shy away from pink most of the time, and honestly pastels aren't really my "thing" either. I really like how the diamonds are small slivers of color, and the straight line quilting works wonderfully with it, too.
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought orange and brown would make it in to one of my quilts, but it did. Pastels were one more step in the growth process for me. I'm convinced that straight line quilting goes good with everything!
DeleteHi Jayne! This is my kind of runner! Often I think what kind of table runner I could have and this is it. In fact I haven done any and now I feel that I want to make this with the colours I use for the reindeer quilt. I love pastels even don't use them in my patchworks. x Teje

DeleteI'm not crazy about pastels, but yours are really grown up! And really, I think chartreuse is a pastel next to darker colors. I love the way you matched the quilting thread to the colors and how it shows up on the background. I have used the freezer paper technique you mentioned, and I loved it. I even figured out how to press my seams open using it, which isn't possible with "regular" paper piecing. ReplyDeleteIt makes me even more excited to try freezer paper now! I love that you said my pastels are 'grown up'! I never thought about it, but if I have to use pastels, then grown up colors are where I want to go!
DeleteLove your pastel "experiment" and especially the quilting. The colors are really nice. I am currently only sticking to simple white. Not much to go wrong there. And less threads to hoard and put into bobbins :)
ReplyDeleteFor me it's currently fine to just hoard the fabric. lol. I have difficulty using brown. And probably will not unless for another recipient. I just don't like brown as a decorational color and see no use in using it.
Sometimes experiments are the best finishes! I am not a big fan of orange and brown at all. But I did finish a quilt recently using those colors and it actually turned out to be really pretty! (well, it had off white and grey mixed in too!)
