Here Comes Hazel!

Finally!  I get to share Hazel!

Isn't there one project you admire, wish and want to make just once?  (more, of course) Enter Hazel!  Seriously, it isn't a surprise that this little lady captured so many hearts in the quilting world!  Elizabeth Hartman @Oh, Fransson knocked it out of the park with this one!

The truth is, when I hear the name Hazel I immediately flashback to Shirley Booth as Hazel in the sitcom back in the early 60's.  She made me want to have a maid (who wouldn't) just like her!  The tag line 'Here Comes Hazel' sticks with me...right or wrong...it's there!

Shirley Booth
Moving along so as not to date myself too much, I bought the Hazel Hedgehog II pattern and could barely contain myself.  I couldn't wait to give it a try!

Ain't she sweet!  I wasn't sure which fabric to use.  Prints, solids?  In the end I decided it was time to use my secret stash of Tula Pink Plume.  It was time.  My sister was worthy, Hazel is worthy...no question!

I decided she was going to get a streak of personality!  Hot pink!  She rocks it big time!  I had to do the glasses.  Cat eyes are just too damn cute to ignore!

Because I was cutting it close, really close to Christmas I needed to kick it in to high gear and get it done.  The quilting is good old straight lines.  Perfect for this wall hanging and fast and effective.

The pink streak received extra lines using pink thread.  Personality on steroids!

I used Pellon Wonder Under 805R for the glasses.  I should have machine stitched them on after ironing in place.  You can see how they frayed a little on the edges.  I did think about it, then promptly let it go.  It was a wall hanging, not a quilt...it'll be okay!

The backing fabric is a piece I've had lurking around in my stash for far too long.  And of course, the hanging corners and tabs for the wood slat.

It did make it across the country just in time for Christmas!  Whew!  I don't know why I wait so long!  Maybe in 2016 I'll make random 'things' throughout the year.  That would be too easy and too organized I think!

    1. The fear of using our secret stash is too much! I had to let it go and it was for my sister…perfect reason to let it go!

  4. Hazel... oh, Hazel! How I love this pattern. I haven't seen a single version that I didn't like. One of these days I'll give in and make myself one! Love your version... the cat's eye glasses always make me think of my mom!

    1. She is just too cute! Because this one is huge, she goes together pretty fast. I finished piecing in a couple hours. There is even a bigger one I may try one day! One day!

  5. This is adorable! I'm sure your sister loved her. I think you need one as well. I have to say more and more I'm falling in love with straight line quilting. Those little pink lines were a great addition.

    1. Yes I do need one for myself!! I think I'll make that one of my goals for the year…sew two of everything…one for me one for whoever! I love straight line quilting, especially after a wash. The small imperfections disappear!

  6. Yeah for Hazel. I was digging through my stash for colours this weekend. Never thought to use gray for her body. Good call on the hot pink. She's awesome.

    1. The good thing about Hazel is she doesn't need a bunch of different fabrics/colors (unless you want to)! Picking fabric isn't as hard as it is with other projects. I like the grey, but plan on using something different with the next one! I can't wait to see what you do with yours!

  7. That dash of pink in her spikes is so perfect, especially with the glasses. Congratulations for getting it done on time - it looks like it was a fun make. Will there be more in the future?

    1. The glasses were a must with this one! It went together pretty fast. I think I pieced it in a couple hours one night. I'm don't usually go for 'themed cute' quilting, but Hazel has always captivated me! Plans to make more? Oh yeah! Hopefully one for me!

  9. Love this Hazel. I don't think you will be the last as she's just too cute. I like the idea of making random things through the year to gift at Christmas...I still have to make a present for someone from last year. She didn't come to the gathering so she missed out!

  12. What are the tabs on the back? Are they loops for a wood dowel to go through? I've seen the corner triangles before but not the tabs. I learn something new all the time!
    Love Hazel! Adorable!

    1. I use a skinny flat slat type of a board for my mini's, but a dowel would be great too! The tabs keep the board next to the quilt so it stays nice and flat. It's an easy and very effective system!

  13. Ha! Every year I think if I would just make a gift or two each month then there wouldn't be such a mad dash at the end of the year - never happens! Your Hazel is *adorable*, and I especially love the way you added in the extra pink quilting lines. Those kind of touches make hand made gifts so special. :)

  16. It looks wonderful Jayne! I love her streak of hot pink (so sassy), it's such a wonderful compliment to the other fabrics and I totally would have shortcut on the glasses and not stitched it on too!

  17. She turned out great! The glasses and pink streak make me think of an edgy, elderly librarian. ;)
