Wonky Block ~ Tutorial {GIVEAWAY}

It's here!  The revised Wonky Block made with Charm Squares!  The idea is give you another option for Charm Squares.  I know I have a stack sitting around!  If you don't, you can always cut blocks for this tutorial.

Making the blocks wonky or tilted isn't hard at all.   I'm going to share my process with you. Show you how I get the 'Wonk' I want with as little fuss as possible.

These are the three basic blocks.  When you make the blocks, you will want to have a variety. The tilting blocks can have a lot of tilt or a little.  Mix it up!

For each block, you will need the following:
1 - 5" x 5" Square
2 - 5" x 2 3/4" Strip
2 - 9 1/2" x 2 3/4" Strip

Sew a 5" x 2 3/4" strip to the top and bottom of your charm square using 1/4" seams.  I press my seams towards the center, but use what ever method you prefer.

Sew the 9 1/2" x 2 3/4" strips on either side.  Press seams towards the outside.  

Once you have all your blocks assembled (strip piecing is wonderful for this), you will need to 'Wonk' and trim each block.

I take a little extra time when it's time to trim my blocks.  Why?  Because I want it to be easy, fast and efficient!  I really don't want to have to think too hard!

Grab your cutting mat and some masking tape!  I used my small rotating mat, but any mat will work just fine.

Each block is going to be trimmed to 7 1/2" unfinished, that will give us a 7" finished block. I place a piece of tape just to the outside of the 7 1/2" line and continue it on all four sides. Just inside the masking tape is my perfect square ready for cutting.  

But...to make it even easier, I slice out notches where my rotary blade will travel so I don't have to continually slice through the tape.  It gets stuck in the blade grooves and is frankly...a pain in the butt!

Now I'm ready to assembly line cut my wonky blocks.

Take a finished block and place it on your cutting mat, tilting it to the right or left to get the wonky effect.  

You can see from the photo above, that the block appears to be covering the entire block area, but you can flip the corners to make sure.  

Once you are sure, take your ruler and rotary cutter, line up just inside the tape (use your lines) and trim the block on all sides to make a perfect wonky square.

Remember to change the angle of the blocks to tilt left, right and center.  Tilt them a little, tilt them a lot, variety is the best effect.

The red line is where you are going to cut.
