Depleted :: Bye Bye Hand Dyed

This in no way means I'm not going to hand dye fabric again!!  I love the process, I love seeing all the unique colors and textures.  That being said, I decided it was time to cut what I had on hand and figure out what to do with them.  This way I can start with a fresh batch when the weather warms up!

It's no secret that my favorite design for hand dyed fabrics is the ever popular Half Square Triangle (HST).  I can pack in every conceivable color and color combination and it always looks good to me.
31" x 42"
Normally I make large HST's blocks (6"-7"), but since I was using the end of my stash I had to go smaller.  Technically you could say I was using scraps.  In the end I was able to make all my HST's 4 1/2" unfinished.  I cut up everything!  Everything!

Believe it or not, I ended up with three baby quilts!  This one happens to be the last one I pieced. I was bound and determined to use every single HST...and I did too!

I twisted and turned until I had large orange, yellow and blue squares.  Then figured out I could make a couple small squares in pink and purple and one blue flying geese.  Now that's what I call by the skin of my teeth!

With three different quilts, I decided different quilting all each one was important.  It's been a while since I have done concentric circle quilting and thought this would be a good choice for this one.

If you haven't tried concentric circles...you should!  I traced a circle in the center for my starting point.  The first few I went very slow.  But after that it was pedal to the metal!  I used the edge of my walking foot as my guide and it gave me just the right amount of space between the circles.

I couldn't imagine doing a large quilt, although I'm sure it would be very doable.  If you are thinking about trying concentric circles, I would recommend trying it with smaller quilts first!

I love, love, love the effect!  Even if you get a little wonky here and there, it still looks good. And as we all know, washing and drying hides just about any little error!

The grey is one of my favorite shades ever:  Kona Shadow.  That color is so perfect for just about everything!  I wanted to take a risk (for me) with the binding, so I used Moda Saffron. It makes for a very nice frame!

Hand dying more fabric will be determined by the weather.  I really am not a fan of cold and basements are cold!  I think there is just enough room left down there for my little dying station!

Here is the lovely stack of baby quilts all scrap inspired, all hand dyed and all different!  I'll share the other two in case you were curious!

    1. I never consider myself a writer…so thank you for those kind words! I don’t often do circle quilting, but I really love the effect!

  2. Oh Jayne it's lovely, beautiful vibrant colours and a great design. The Shadow background is perfect, anything else would have been too bright and spoilt the effect. I can't wait to see the other two.

    1. While I broke out of my regular design with hand dyed fabrics, I have a really hard time using anything other than the Kona Shadow! It brings the colors to life!

  8. beautiful! I have a stack of hand dyed fabrics waiting for a project. hmmm. do you find concentric circles easier than a spiral? I haven't done either but am wanting to.

  9. You've made an interesting block. I love it. The hand-dyed fabrics show it off so beautifully. Vibrant quilt. Yes, I would love to see the others. Congrats on this wonderful finish. ;^)

  11. I am definitely curious about the other two. I do like how you were able to make the inner color "rings" the same color with your HSTs for this one, and the spiral quilting compliments the design perfectly.

  13. Love the colors of the hand dyed fabrics with the shadow background. The circle quilting is perfect for that quilt. Any baby would be so lucky to have that very pretty quilt to snuggle into. Can't wait to see the other two quilts you made. Nadine W. Northern Cali

  15. So wonderful. I think I'll try that concentric circles thing. I will definitely start out small. I need to get braver about these things, and you have inspired me.

  16. You are such a tease! Yes, we want to see the other two baby quilts! I did the concentric quilting on a 68" square pieced quilt for one of the twin granddaughters high school graduation two years ago. It wasn't so bad on a larger quilt and I don't have a vey large throat on my Bernina 580.

  17. I forgot to tell you, this one is very sweet and modern looking. I love anything with a HST too! Great job!

  18. After seeing your lovely quilts I think I'm going to have to try hand dyeing some fabrics. Using the last of some fav fabrics is like saying goodbye to an old friend.

I quilted a 60 x 80 quilt with concentric circles on my DSM and gosh was it difficult to begin with to get all the bulk circling around in the small harp. But I'd like to give it a try again one of these days.

Looking forward to some of your new hand dyes!

  24. You knocked another one out of the park! It's super cute! I love that you were able to use up all the hand dyeds!! Hey I think I should come visit and learn to dye;)

  25. Those colors are so rich and saturated! Love them! I have wanted for quite a while to try this kind of circle quilting. Do you have any other tips? Would you consider writing a detailed tutorial on how to do this? Or have you seen a really good one you would recommend?

  26. Looks fabulous, Jayne! Love the colours and the quilting. Yes please to seeing the other two.

  27. I agree that saffron sparkles against the grey. But then, I have never not loved anything that you have done. Next time, if you dye fabric and have some scraps left over, you do have my address :-) And you're such a tease when you say "in case you are curious". Everyone is curious to see the other two.

  28. Lovely quilt with all the colors - yes, it does work! Congrats on using up that stash to make a fresh batch.

  29. So pretty Jayne! Love the binding, well I love all of it truth be told. When you did your spiral quilting, did you get much of a wave in the quilt? If so, did you block it? Just curious. I have spiral quilted one piece and it has a bit of a wave now.

  30. This is a great quilt Jayne! I love the design, those HSTs are so sweet, and those circles are to die for! I want to quilt that design so badly but haven't tried it yet. Maybe 2017 is the year. :)

  31. Beautifully done. No one would guess that you were trying to use up scraps for the last one. The quilting is perfect. Congrats on a fun and bright finish.

  32. This is lovely - how fantastic to use every last piece. I haven't used Shadow yet but it looks great in this quilt.

  33. I would never have guessed the layout was determined by what was "left over". And I love the spiral quilting. Looking forward to warmer weather so we can go on a hand dyeing adventure with you!

  34. This quilt is absolutely dreamy! I'm so glad I sat down to catch up on some blogs so that I didn't miss it. Thanks for the encouragement to try the concentric circles. I've never done that successfully. Maybe on my next baby quilt!
