Josephine's Quilt Finish :: Just In The Nick Of Time

When I started this project at the beginning of February (Purge Quilt For Josephine), I thought I had all the time in the world to finish it before little baby Josephine made her appearance.  And realistically, I did!  I just didn't follow through with finishing it in a timely manner!

Josephine decided it was time to make her appearance on March 27th!  She is a beautiful little girl who weighed in at 7 pounds 7 ounces!  She has a head of dark hair just like Mommy, Daddy and little brother.  Her Mama is a little bit of a thing, maybe 100 pounds soaking wet...how she housed that little baby I'll never know!  This family is super good friends with my daughter (Britt is the God-Mother of their first child), and I wanted to make something special for them.

Josephine's Quilt
36" x 44"
This purge quilt made using the Strip Tube method (see earlier post) was fast and turned out to be a favorite of mine!  I can see making it using wider strips in all kinds of colors and prints!  A good pattern to use up some not so desirable fabrics!

I was at the burying threads and sewing on the binding when word came down this birth was on! Knowing there was no time to waste I blew through it in record time!

I decided to go with concentric circles again!  While quilting the circles, I tried to take in progress photos for a basic tutorial.  I will try and get that together in the next week!

I started with my first circle, tied it off and began the 1/2" lines.  Going 'round and round and round and round'!

Eventually I made it to the end!  I used several different colors of thread for something different and besides, its all about scrappy!  The thread colors are white, orange, grey, yellow and blue.

You can see that all isn't perfect in the lines.  That doesn't bother me in the least.  This baby will spit up on it at the very least and besides...the crinkle effect comes into play after a wash and dry.

That issue has been taken care of!  Fun stuff happens with washing!

With a few pieces of blocks left over, I randomly pieced four together to make an even more scrappy block for the back.  It's been a while since I did a fun backing!  It's really fun and as always it's like two quilts in one!

Super close up detail!  Get your camera's out and play with shots!  You may get one amazing photo out of twenty, but it sure is worth it!

A little bundle for a little bundle!  I'm not sure when this package will be delivered.  She will be a little preoccupied getting settled in and being wrapped like up like a burrito to care to much about it for now!

  1. Oh what lovely news for me to wake up to, the world is a little richer for the safe arrival of a precious daughter. Congrats to the parents and Welcome to the World Josephine. You have made her a lovely quilt Jayne, I especially like the back, which is because I am very interested in quit backs right now. It's as if the front almost doesn't matter, I just need to check out the back. Weird or what?

    1. It was one of those ‘gotta use this fabric’ quilts and in the end…I really like it! I’m not a print girl, but this makes me happy!

  9. Really beautiful quilt for a lucky little girl. I love the circles on it, which pops the on point design.

    1. Concentric circles are so amazing! I love that look! The fun thing about this technique (tube piecing) is that it looks on point without making it an actual on point quilt! If that makes sense!

  12. Jayne, this is really beautiful quilt and circle quilting is my favourite! This is 'not so much you' because your creations are usually with solids but you found a great way to make a beautiful quilt with prints. I miss solids and can only ask myself why I don't buy more solids?! x Teje

  17. There are so many things to like about this quilt -- the palette, the prints -- but my favorite features are the skinny sashing (fewer points to match up!) and the incomplete blocks along the perimeter. Lovely!

  18. What a great size for a baby quilt! I really like that you used different colored thread in the quilting. It turned out beautifully, and I am sure it will be well loved. :)

  21. This is such a sweet little baby quilt and imagine working on it as she was making her way into this world. Concentric circles work so well with this design and colours. Perfect just like her little self, I'm sure.

  22. It's super quilt. I have done the strip tube one before and love it! But I haven't thought of sashing it-great idea. Have you ever just did a spiral quilting so you don't have to tie and bury all those threads?

  23. I love this! I really like your choice of circle quilting to balance out the sharp angles of the quilt, and I adore your use of several thread colors!! A fabulous baby quilt that I am sure will be treasured! (and I *really* love baby burritos!! :-)

  24. Wow, this is lovely. That is so cool how you did the concentric circles. What do you do when you run out of fabric, like near the corners? I am guessing you just continue on with half circles or half moons? Josephine will love it and feel all you love when she's enjoying it. ~smile~
