To piece a quilt like this it takes less than a day. Perfect for someone who wants a quick finish. Half square triangles are good for that!
The part that takes the longest is the quilting part! That is if you want to go hog wild and quilt it to death. Which is my preferred method with these geometric HST quilts.
This was the first time that I did a special kind of motif in the center of one of the squares. I figured I may as well play a little bit and change things up. It's basically a pretty simple design, but it added a special touch to the finish.
The back shows the detail a little better. It seemed like the perfect place to embellish with quilting.
For the square and rectangle I used Aurifil Peony (2440) and the remainder of the quilt is Aurifil Bright Pink (2425). There was an exception made for the center of the square where I used 4 different colors. Other than that...I kept it pretty simple!
There's a lot going on here! Diamonds, grid, 1/2" lines, 3/4" lines and free motion quilting. However it all works together I think. I really like to quilt this way. The kitchen sink of straight lines and all you can do with them. Since I don't really have a concrete plan when I quilt, half the fun is making all the sections fit together seamlessly. Like I actually did plan it out!
Some people love taking photos of their quilts with a twist in the middle...I love throwing it in a pile! It seems to be my go to photo!
My next Baby Geo will be using a dark blue for the rectangle and lighter blues surrounding each shape. It'll happen soon as it's a custom request for my sister. She knows a friend who is expecting...and I'm here to help!
There are so many things to make that I don't want to take time to make a quit twist-your idea of a pile is much quicker! Such pretty girliness in this quilt.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fun and happy design! I like those square and rectangle shapes that give focus to the overall design. Great colors too. Your machine quilting is lovely. I'm learning more and more to respect walking foot quilting, and what can be done with it, though I think FMQ will always be my go-to. Your sister will definitely be happy with her custom order. A great job for a small space!
ReplyDeleteI’m a big fan of the graphic impact of this design! There is so much that can be done with a walking foot and I’m very comfortable using it. FMQ is also great. Except for me it has to be done in very small doses!

ReplyDeleteAnother beautiful finish. Even if your quilting is unplanned, it doesn't seem so. The pink colors all work/play well together and are such a happy combination. So wonderful that you can work on something with people going by you. Sometimes it's nice to be where things are happening so you can keep in touch.
ReplyDeleteI have an idea of what I want to do when quilting, it’s just not planned before hand. And it’s always fun to see how it comes together. As for the traffic, it is nice sometimes. I like to listen to podcasts and it makes it hard to hear when everyone is talking or cooking!! I shouldn’t complain at least I still have a sewing space!

ReplyDeleteYou can’t go wrong with anything pink or coral in my opinion!! It’s such a quick quilt to make. Maybe that’s why I add so much quilting! I almost feel like I’ve cheated when the piecing is done!

ReplyDeleteOh gosh, Jayne -- you're probably getting tired of me telling you this over and over again, but I am so in awe of your uncanny ability to create sophisticated, enticing color palettes. It's not just the combination of shades you've selected, but also the balance. I always find myself stopping to study your photos, wanting to understand what you've done that makes the image so compelling to me. In this case, I think it's the cooler purples that are close enough to the hot pinks that they don't jump out immediately, but still provide temperature contrast to let those corals sizzle! I like your approach to the quilting, too. Remind me -- are you quilting on a frame or on a sit down machine? Did you use any kind of curved ruler or template for the curved petal shapes? I'm asking because they look awesome. :-)

ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful version of your great design, Jayne! I love all that color! How do you baste your quilts so that they stay so flat and smooth for your quilting? I'm having trouble with tucks and pleats no matter how I baste these days. It's making me wonder about my built in walking foot, too - which I thought would be so deluxe!
