Something From Nothing

It's been a while!  Between the beautiful weather, yard work and helping my daughter make her first quilt in a couple of years and putting the final touches on a PDF quilt pattern...I haven't had much time for blogging or making!

The good news is my 'Sparkle' quilt pattern will be ready to release in a week!  It's amazing how much work goes into writing.  I have been second and third guessing myself for two weeks, but at this point I have to just let it go!

When I say I didn't have much time to quilt, I mean I haven't been able to sit and get serious about it.  I have taken a little time almost every day to make some fun blocks using many of my scraps.  At first it was an experiment that quickly turned into 'this could be something'!

You know I'm a big fan of color, the more the merrier!  These blocks have it all!  They were fun to put together using random color combinations, and of course scraps.  I kept making and making until I had to make a decision.  What am I going to do with the blocks.  The best answer:  a table runner!

This is where it begins.  Color combinations using three colors.  I tried to be as random as possible with the colors, but I there were times when it seemed like I was going back to the same colors over and over.

From the above pieces, comes this lovely group of blocks!  The center of the blocks and the size of the blocks vary in size and shape.

The blocks are at least 3" wide and 6" long.  You can't tell from this block, but I did try to limit my use with the ruler!

Just a few of my favorite things...

I'd love to say my scrap heap was depleted...

After making what I thought would be enough blocks for a table runner, I had to figure out how I might puzzle together all the random sizes.

My first idea of adding a strip on one side or the top or bottom was a failure.  The second idea was to add another color round on the blocks that needed beefing up.  That idea worked very well!

Hopefully in between making a quilt with my daughter I can squeeze in time to quilt this!  I'm not complaining...It's been so much fun making blocks and spending time with Britt!  My quilting can wait because I know she couldn't possibly want to make another quilt...how wrong I was...she has the quilting bug!!

    1. It was a lot of fun coming up with color combinations! I love that having blocks that are different sizes so I don’t have to worry about precision lining up of the seams!

  5. Color. Yes! That's the best asset of each block. I agree that it's hard to imagine anyone's scrap heap becoming deleted. :-) I've been playing with a wide range of solids too, for my MQG chapter's "Charms and Chips Challenge" using only charm packs and micro-chip packs. Bright colors and contrast are keys to success.

  7. Love your color and as far as the scrap bin becoming depleted. . . .well. . .good luck with that!! Congratulations on infecting your daughter with the quilting bug. I admire those mother/daughter quilting duos. I tried to infect my daughters; but, failed. I'm hoping to infect the granddaughters with the quilting bug. . .fingers crossed!

    1. I know my scrap bin will always be full and I don’t mind one bit! My daughter was the one who insisted I learn to quilt and she taught me everything she knew. It didn’t take long for the ‘bug’ to hit! We use to quilt together often and then she abandoned me, so it’s nice when she comes back and quilts again!

  8. How interesting that your intention is to be random with the color pairings! I think many of us, myself included, put too much effort into trying to pick the "right" color combos, but the end result with your unexpected pairings is so much more exciting. Congrats on your pattern release!

    1. I know it can be hard for some people to let go and pick colors randomly. One thing I really love about doing it that way is you never know what you’ll come up with. Combinations you might never think would work together or you wouldn’t think of!

  11. Love how simply 'beefing up' a few of the blocks, it all fit together!

  12. I love your bright vibrant colors. And, look how well all those wonderful colors play with each other. My daughter caught the bug in high school. Although it sat dormant for a while she is back at it happily. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to do any quilting together for years. If we lived closer together or on any had most any other road connecting our houses we probably could do some one day mini retreats together. But I-95 can be so clogged with traffic that the 1.5 trip could take 4 hours or more. Sigh. But we do enjoy chatting about our quilting as time allows.

  14. I think colorful is great! So many quilter I know work with the Civil War fabrics and the like, which are "drab" to me.

  15. Great use of all those colors!!
