I recently acquired Electric Quilt 7 for a Mac. I seriously want a better tool to create designs and patterns. Talk about a learning curve! But I'm working through it ever so slowly!
I had this vision of triangles...so I decided to make a paper pieced template! This is super basic, super simple. But I love it!
They are 2 1/2" x 6 1/2". I told my husband they looked like gnome hats, which he had to bring it to another level...dunce caps!! Husbands!
After staring at these for days, I had a little tiny idea of what I wanted to do. believe me these pieces were moved every which way until I could figure it out!
Yesterday afternoon I settled on an idea. Teeny tiny squares. When I say teeny tiny....these are the smallest squares I have ever made on purpose! I started with 1" squares and basically guessed at the spacing. This center square had to fit inside of the border of gnome hats.
They look like a pain in the butt, and they are...but it actually went pretty fast. Little 1/4" squares...did I mention there are 49 of them? 49 different colors? 49.
I was a bit ticked at myself last night. I realized I had 6 rows with 7 squares. So this morning I ripped a couple seams, found 7 more colors and viola! Done!
How about that back?! I'm a sucker for quilt cheesecake shots...and this...this does it for me!
Continuing on with this journey...
19" x 19" for now! |
Once I added another row of squares, I hemmed and hawed about what to do next. One skinny 1/4" blue frame for the center came to mind. Finally those little gnome hats could be added. I added a couple little squares in the middle of each border and made some corner pieces.
So far, this is it. It could become just about anything right now. Wall hanging, pillow cover, table topper. My little mind is racing...should I expand on this idea and make it into a ROYGBIV quilt?! I just don't know!
Which makes me want to put it aside, let some time pass and then decide!

Absolutely lovely!! Isn't it the best when a bit of playing with fabrics ends up in such a cheerful result?!
ReplyDeleteIt really is a fun challenge. I never know where it will take me! After a few projects that were much more structured, this was a great change!

DeleteIt's wonderful! I totally love it. I'm so glad the dunce caps showed back up, haha! I don't really want to try dealing with such small squares in my current stage of sewing, but this sure does look fun!

ReplyDeleteThe tiny squares are really tiny. Great design, must check the Electric Quilt 7!
ReplyDeleteI love what you started here. It would stand alone beautifully on it's own. It could also be fun though to use is at a learning tool to get more experience in EQ. Maybe make it into an EQ only quilt, all with pieces that you design?
ReplyDeleteWhatever you decide, good luck!
I love what you've created!
ReplyDeleteWow! Those are tiny! But they are oh so adorable.
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested in hearing more about your adventures with EQ - I have been wondering about it... Those little squares are too cute - what a good idea!
