Just Vanilla

Vanilla.  It sounds so unexciting, boring, normal, conventional.  'It's so vanilla' ~ when that statement is said, it doesn't exactly get you excited, does it?!

My latest fabric haul was just that.  Vanilla.  Bland and oh so boring.  Just take a look.  I love, love color and this is totally the opposite.

Let's see, Kona Storm, Kona Cadet, Kona Black, Kona bone, putty and oyster.  The last three are actually different, but they sure look the same!

How about this batch.  Kona white, and some low volume text prints. Vanilla...not very stimulating at all!  What the heck is the matter with me. I gotta do better than this!

And so I got to thinking.  What is vanilla.  When you think of vanilla, you do think of plain and unexciting.  But did you know vanilla is a flavor derived from orchids?  I don't think orchids are boring at all!    Vanilla is the second most expensive spice after saffron.  What? Growing vanilla pods takes a lot of hard work.  Very labor intensive.

Think about it.  Plain old boring vanilla becomes delicious, decadent chocolate cake!  Vanilla zabaglione with raspberries!  Creme brulee! Cookies!  Even perfume!

While this batch of fabric appears to be vanilla boring, one day I'll whip up a recipe and transform it into a decadent, delicious sweet dessert!

***just a little side note:  The large text print is 108" that I was going to use for a backing.  Much to my surprise I was sent two pieces instead of one and to top it all off...it didn't even add up to the two yards I had ordered.  That's not all...I was shorted 2 yards of white as well!

SO, that takes care of the vanilla portion of fabric.  If you are an avid or not so avid Instagramer, you may be aware of #thegreatfabricdestash. This is me: Twiggy & Opal, I'm on instagram every day. (maybe too often!)  The great fabric destash is where you can sell your stash.  Maybe it's something you no longer love, like or want.  You can post it and believe me there are lots of 'takers' who are looking for just what you have to offer.  Generally, the prices are good.

I bought more vanilla!  A little Riley Blake 'Cream on Cream'!  My low volume stash is getting bigger and bigger!  I think it's time to stop that!

My favorite is this haul!

Fabulous woven stripes!  If you know me, you know I love my Kaffe Fasset woven stripes.  I haven't bought any in years and it was time to stock up.  I was so happy to have seen these on IG and thrilled when I received them!  All but two were ones I didn't have!

Now it's time to go bake a cake or two!  Measure out some fabric, add some vanilla, stir it up and pop it in the oven!

  4. Those stripes are wonderful! I have been collecting them for years and hope to get them out soon and start using them. I am sure I have enough fabric to sew up half a dozen quilts!
