Twist & Shout

I've had this quilt hanging on my design wall far too long!  It seems like a long time.  Back in I decided it was time to wrangle my hand dyed scraps.  It started here:  Scrap It Out.

I was playing around with Half Rectangles Triangles and came up this a block:  HRT With A Twist.  Because I was messing around...I ended up with two different sizes and didn't really have a plan for either.  This is a fun block for me to make, I really couldn't help myself.

Before I knew it, there was a little stack of these!

They hung on the wall for weeks while I pondered their fate.  What can I do, what should I do, what will I do?!

I added a frame around the smaller blocks which paired with the larger blocks, gave me a stack to work with.

That worked!  A seemingly complicated and busy block became a little quilt after all!

HRT WITH A TWIST
31 1/2" x 38 1/2"

The addition of the border increased the size and neutralized the design.

I machine quilted a geometric grid design.  I'm loving the little grids in each center square!

For the back, I used Kona Honeydew.  Honeydew has such a fresh clean look, I love it! There are still plenty of hand dyed scraps lingering in my bin.  Won't there always be?! Most have been cleaned up and cut into squares for future use.  You know, just in case a brilliant idea comes knocking at my door!

    1. I have only dabbled in HRT's and hope to do more experimenting with them soon. I would also love to try the block again!

  2. The frames work so well and give the eye something to bounce around and look for in the pattern. I love the quilting and the grid it creates on the back; any plans on what to do with the quilt?

    1. This is one busy quilt with all the color! I hope to use the block and make something a little more 'subdued'!

  5. This is such a cute quilt, Jayne. I've seen something similar done in feed sack around a solid center but I like this one better. Love the quilting! Wish I could come visit with you and get some sewing done. Good job! Nadine W. North Cali

  7. I like everything about this - the solid colours, the great design (I'm a big fan of the jaunty off set squares too) and the quilting - just fabulous all over, thanks for showing us!

    1. It was a fun way to use some scraps! Which I think we all like to do once in a while. The quilting ended up being much more effective than I thought it would be, so all in all…this was a win, win quilt!

I thought the block would be great for the hand dyed fabric scraps.

  9. I love seeing your hand dyed projects, and this one turned out so great! I am thrilled to find out the back is a Kona color instead of one of your own fabrics!! Honeydew will be at the top of a new list of must haves :)

    1. It is a little thing! Most of these blocks were test blocks and I couldn't see them going to waste! A baby quilt was the perfect solution!

    1. The block itself is very simple, even with the partial seam. The frames seemed like the perfect solution to the different size blocks!

    1. While most of the blocks in this quilt were test blocks, I couldn't very well let them sit! I had enough to make something…baby quilt!

  16. Such a clever design. Looks more complicated than it really is. And I really LOVE the honeydew backing. I don't think I've ever paid attention to that color and it's so pretty.

    1. Yes, the block is really pretty simple. I love when it looks hard, but really isn't. Honeydew was a color I was lucky enough to 'stumble' on! I've used it many times. It's a good one to have on hand!
