There is something oddly satisfying while making these. How small can you go? How different can you make it? How much detail is too much? It has become a challenge!
The finished size of these varies from 3 3/4" to 4 1/4". Tiny little bitties!
This was the last one I make. My swapping partner wanted peacock colors and I was happy to oblige! The first time I quilted this I was so mad at myself! What the hell was I thinking...I totally ruined it! Out came the seam ripper and I took an easier and more effective design.
Second time was a charm! You may be thinking, 'Did she hand stitch the binding? On a mini mini?'. Well, yes I did! In my defense, I have never machine sewn a binding on and I wasn't about to try it now! Plus, it only takes 10, maybe 15 minutes to tack the binding down and it gives me something to do in the evenings...no idle hands here!
One of these I messed up! Can you figure out which one it is? I didn't have the heart to redo it...I don't think the mistake took away from the design. At least I hope it didn't. The two on the left are Shibori Hand Dyed fabrics. Really, saving those little bits are paying off with this obsession!
I enjoy quilting these little ones too! Some of them get more pizazz than others. It depends on the design or should I say 'I let the design speak to me'!!
Like this one...it told me to go crazy and have fun with it.
I found a bag of shot cotton half square triangles and knew I had to use them. Why else would I be holding on to them for so long?!
Favorites? Yes, I have a couple! The top one in this photo is one of my very favorites! It started as one idea and when that wasn't working, it morphed into this abstract color monster!
And I do love my first two Mini Minis!

I'm trying to tame my fanatical fixation and only make the occasional mini. However, I fell off the wagon this morning. It was a moment of weakness! One step forward, two steps back...the cold hard truth is, I enjoy making these. I just hope it doesn't become my norm...and that eventually there will be a cure for what ails me!

This seem to be addictive (I notice Yvonne can't stop either). Maybe you need a help group? On the other hand they are a great way to use little scraps, and are very, very sweet.

DeleteI'm with your Jayne, I have slowed but will continue to make them. There is something about the small size that really frees me to play and have fun in a way I haven't felt about quilting in a long time!

DeleteThey're like little pieces of candy. And no calories! My favorites are the ones with the solid backs because the quilting is just so neat on them. (I like the fronts, too, though.)

ReplyDeleteWhat great coasters these would make. All done differently, like this, not matched sets. I can see how these beautiful mini quilts would become addictive, but maybe I could manage to limit them to in-between projects...? Maybe not!

DeleteI don't see anything wrong with making these.... they are adorable!! :) I can see a whole collage on a wall with these. There is something so satisfying about starting and finishing a quilt on the same day.. not matter the size. Have fun!!

ReplyDeleteYikes! Impressed that you put binding on them (or is this required for these minis?) I would have turned through a seam and then quilted. These really are little bits of lovely. Congrats.
ReplyDeleteThe binding part isn't that bad actually! I think there have been some that were swapped without bindings and I'm not sure if its required. I like them better with binding and really don't mind sewing them on!

ReplyDeleteIf you must have an ailment, this isn't such a bad one. Perhaps, it might even be efficient. You can practice or evaluate a technique before getting into a full-fledged quilt. Besides, the keepsakes from friends are nice too.
