Epic Sampler BOM

Late last year, before things became crazy with the holidays, I decided to join another Block of the Month.  I tend to fall behind (way behind) with these, and then have a marathon session to catch up...only to repeat the same process a few months over again.  I've nearly accepted that that is the way I work with a BOM!

Elizabeth Dackson from Don't Call Me Betsy started the Epic Sampler BOM in October. The finished quilt will be 60" x 72", consist of 6" and 12" blocks, some paper pieced and there will be three blocks a month.

It didn't take long for me to become behind!  I was behind before it even started!!  Four months later, I decided I better get my butt in gear!  But wait!!  I didn't have a clue what colors or fabric I was going to use!  Same old, same old!

After a couple attempts with the color sheet, I settled on a rainbow theme.  This will be my guide.  Since there are three blocks per month, and they aren't in any particular order, it will be interesting to see how this will play out.  The background will be a combination of white and grey.

This is a good old classic!

If you want to learn paper piecing, I think this is a perfect block to start with.

I lost my way on this one!  With 37 pieces, I easily became confused.  In the end I changed it up and decided it will be just fine!

I am in LOVE with this block!  I see a future in this one, by far my favorite!

How about that Vinyl WIP bag?!  It's the perfect size to hold and keep all by finished BOM blocks safe and sound!

I bought more vinyl for a new idea I have brewing in my head!  Stay tuned for that, it should be interesting...she said with her fingers crossed...

Three more blocks to go and I'll be caught up!  Yay!  Picking colors and fabric for a project is difficult for me, it always has been.  And I often wonder why I make it difficult for myself. Especially for a BOM.  In the end, I go with my gut and as always...fly by the seat of my pants!

Tell me what you think?  Do you like Block of the Month clubs?  Are you participating in one now?  Do you enjoy them?

  1. I have never done a BOM! I just feel like there is too much pressure in it - ha ha. This one definitely called for a coloring sheet; it is so complicated. But I like your finished blocks even more than the sheet. They look more alive. I can see this is a skill building quilt - not that you need it, but I might benefit from some such.

    1. Initially I wanted to see what the fuss was all about for BOM's! I end up getting sucked in pretty easily! And yes, they stress me out! I am forever behind. It's hard working on a block a month when I love starting and finishing a quilt at one time! Can't quit now! I will say it's fun learning new techniques and trying different blocks!

  2. I have never done a BOM, either. But I do love your color plan for the final layout, and I look forward to watching it come together for you!

    1. I'm just hoping it turns out when it's finished! With so many different blocks and the fact that it's monthly…I'm a little bit concerned!

  5. I would definitely fall behind a block of the month. I have fallen in love with your pineapple block. Your colour combination took my breath away. I like your project bag as well.

  6. I fear I would work the same way if I were to joing a BOM, which is why I was so hesitant to joing a quilting bee. Currently we are six members with two months to complete blocks. So as to not procrastinate, I finish them as soon as possibile to not even allow myself the chance to do so. This will be a fun one to see grow... looking foward to it! Totally digging your pink star!

I just finished a pineapple block with 100 pieces... love the look in XXL, but I get what you mean about being a little confused!

  7. Oh I always get behind on those BOM things, but I'm a sucker for them! Love the rainbow idea. Congrats on almost catching up...hang in there!

  8. One block per month is enough for me but three is just a recipe for me to get behind. Like your rainbow concept and it looks like it's going to be stunning when you're all done.

    1. One thing I don't like about a BOM is doing a block a month (or three), but I keep joining in the fun just the same! I like having every thing out, made and finished at one time. BOM's are not designed for that!

  9. Oh yay! If your first blocks are any indication.... This is certainly going to be an epic quilt! Love your choice to go the rainbow route!

  10. This is going to be gorgeous--it is already. You just can't go wrong with rainbow IMHO. I love that you colored your plan with pencils. It's still my favorite way to plan in this age of digital coloring. I haven't done a BOM. Maybe someday...

  11. Your blocks are great! I like the idea of BOM but I, too, find it hard to make a decision on fabric/colour on such short notice. LOL So I end up not starting the BOM because I'm too far behind.

  13. I have done exactly 1 BOM, but it wasn't a club, it was a free HST BOM with Jeni, InColorOrder. I loved it as it was during a transition time between moves and I didn't have ANY of my fabric at hand, and I just picked up a few fat quarters locally and went from there. It is one of my favorite quilts! I enjoyed it so much I made up my own last year. It is also the idea behind my Medallion this year. But I keep it pretty simple. I have found it fun to have one year-long project going, and something to look forward to at the end of the year :)

  14. I've never tried a BOM, but know myself well enough to say I would end up coming at it just like you do, except maybe without the catching up bit! Your coloured sketch looks good so keep it up and this should be pretty spectacular.

  17. I love the color scheme you decided on. The quilt will look amazing, Jayne. It makes me want to pull my Modern Building Blocks quilt out and work on it some more. I am a sucker for BOM, maybe its the not knowing that I like so much.

  19. I tried and I failed. Your sketch is looking good. Fingers crossed for keeping up!

  20. I will adopt no more BOMs until our shared BOM is done. Even if this one looks wicked good and oh so tempting. But you know I'm a sucker for solids... and rainbow. I have some early horrendous versions of the old Bear's Paw block. Not even fit for Throwback Thursday.
