Throwback Thursday ~ Circa 2011

I've missed the last couple Throwback Thursday's, and thought this was the perfect time to share a blast from the past!  Thank you Jenn for the gentle reminder!

My share:  something subdued, something normal.  This was one of my early attempts at coming up with my own design.  The irresistible pull into the wacky world of Jay McCarroll drew me in with the fabric.  The fabric line is 'Germania', of which I had pieces of every color, but stayed blues for this little baby!

I couldn't tell you the size of the blocks, accent blocks or even the size of the quilt.  I didn't exactly keep good records back then.  I do know the colors of the solid squares were pulled from the fabric.  I made five blocks in each print and used five different solids.  That's about all I remember!

Oh, and the fact that I played with the border and added a totally standout yellow for the binding. That was 'crazy train' thinking!

Pile of doneness.  I do love the funky print with the blue splats and red!  It's called 'Nerggle City'...how can you not love that?!

Back then, I didn't do much in the way of killer cool quilting.  Dense quilting never crossed my mind, crazy wild quilting was germinating in my brain but hadn't quite developed.  This was as crazy as it got back then.

I enjoy looking back on my early quilts.  The long and windy road of what works and what doesn't, design decisions, fabric choices...it's has been a lot like Mr. Toads Wild Ride!  You never want to get off!

    1. It seems like so long ago that I made this quilt! The fabric was a fun departure from my norm!

  2. For some reason this quilt screams science to me. Maybe the fun red designs that sort of look like molecule structures, and the print that looks like chains. And the quilting is cool as all get out. It reminds me of blips on a monitor screen.

    1. It does have a mad scientist vibe about it! I think there was even some prints that had gems in petri dishes! My favorite is the red design on the blue…such a fun print. The quilting worked out just fine, nothing crazy. The beginnings of what was to come I suppose!

  4. It is so fun to see some of your older quilts. Until I had my blog, I rarely took photos of my quilts and almost all of them have gone to a new home. Love that shade of blue!

    1. My Throw Backs are all in new homes too! I wish I had known how to take better pictures back then, but with computer programs you can tweak awful ones and make them a little better. Having my blog has helped 150% on taking good photos!

  5. Oh, this is a fun one. I love the funky fabrics and the quilting, while sort of minimal, adds another little jolt--like lightning or a heart monitor. And the red and yellow in the border and binding are just right for focusing in on the accent squares. And you even had a cool tree shot of it instead of a "quilt with legs" shot. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I use to photograph all my quilts on that limb! It's fun to look back and see that some older quilts can still be very current in design. Not that I'll make one like this again, but it's interesting to compare now and then!

    1. I think when I saw the name of that print "Nerggle City' it made me love it even more! I hung many quilts from that limb! I haven't in a while, but it's still available if I ever feel the need!

  8. Nerggle makes me gerrgle! So cute, and even your early attempts at design are terrific. I agree - it's fun to look at what I used to make and see how I've changed and evolved. And hell no I'm never getting off this wild ride either - way too exciting!

    1. Nerggle…gerrrgle…too funny! As far as a wild ride, it's a cheap thrill now a days and one I too do not want to get off of!

  9. I like it. Those fabrics would still be current today, in my opinion. I really like the bright colours on the darker blue background, they stand out great. I like the design of the quilt, was it your own or a pattern? I don't think I had heard of pieced back back then, apart from two sided reversible quilts. Of course that was in my pre blog reading days when I was still in the dark ages :(. The back was simple with the two narrow lines but really brightened up the back. As for the quilting shhhhhh, I didn't notice 'til you pointed it out.

    1. I really think the design could be very current for today as well. I believe I saw elements from several quilts and designed based on all of them. The quilting was fun and at the time I thought I was being really creative and crazy!

  10. What a fun quilt, Jayne! So vibrant! I would have been super nervous using blue prints for the background, but you did a great job with them!

  11. Those blue splats look like germs to me! Or maybe my vision is being clouded by two sick toddlers. :) Isn't it funny how much more we can tell people about our current quilts compared to the older ones? Gotta keep good notes so we can blog about it. :) Thanks for linking up with Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge!
