This time I used a very, very small amount of the colors and relied on the overall design to carry me through.
The triangles are tiny at just 1/2" high. It was a little tough piecing them together because of the size, but not in the least bit impossible. After the triangles were together I built the rest of the quilt around them.
The light gray is Kona Shadow, dark gray is Kona Medium Gray and the black is Kona Black. Gray is a color I have on hand at all times. Its been my go to background and backing fabric for years. As much as I'd like to change things up I never seem to get there!
What's your favorite background color? Do you find it hard to change it up sometimes?
Because this was a mini, I was looking forward to giving it the quilting treatment. I quilted a triangle design in the section above the triangles and straight lines throughout the rest of the quilt with Aurifil Light Blue Gray (2610). The lines vary in width from 1/8" to about 1/4".
I had to add a little twist to go along with the triangles! I mean, why not?! I pulled out Aurifil Spring Green (1231), Delft Blue (2730) and Blossom Pink (2530) and quilted lines above and below the triangles. I like the subtle detail.
I know most people don't wash their mini's, but I do! Not this one, but 9 out of 10 I'll wash. I'm a die hard sucker for the crinkle effect!
Now I can enter my quilt knowing I followed the rules and at least have a chance! Again, the reason I love these Curated Quilt challenges is for the challenge. It gives me a boost of energy, gets my creative juices flowing and stimulates my brain! In or not...it's a worthwhile challenge.
Since the Minimal Mini Quilt deadline isn't until January 10th, I may have time to squeeze another one in! Get obsessed much Jayne?! You never know!

DeleteNice design Jayne and I love the quilting! Good luck with it! I seem to always pick white or off white as a background and I would actually love to use more grey.
ReplyDeleteWhite and off white are my second choice! I use a lot of Kona Silver or Shadow gray. They are pretty light and perfect to highlight prints or solids!
DeleteIt’s lovely; it’s hard to imagine anything more minimal as far as the colours go, but it’s certainly square. In fact, I think the frame even accentuates the square! To answer your question: I still use off-white quite a lot, but now tend to favour French navy, or, like you, grey.
ReplyDeleteI love this so much! especially the bits of colorful quilting! stunning. I do tend to change up my backgrounds all the time, not one specific color.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could change up my backgrounds a little more! Maybe that will be my one and only resolution for the New Year!

ReplyDeleteI like Kona White, Snow, and Silver as background colors... but last year I experimented with some really bold choices as well (like Berry) and really liked the results.
what a stunning piece - I love to study these small pieces and find the subtle details - so creative. I am all over the map with backgrounds - have used Fig Tree cream, Kona Snow, Kona parchment, every shade of grey known to man, and I just snagged 12 yards of linen texture by Makour UK to use as backgrounds for my two Allison Glass fabric projects.

When I go to the quilt shop, it's always the bright and splashy colors and prints that leap into my arms and beg to come home with me. I have to go shopping specifically for background fabric with each new project because I have nothing that goes with all those diva fabrics in my stash!
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing as you except with solids! Lots of smaller pieces. I’ve tried to keep up with having lots of yardage for backings and back grounds. There was a time when I was totally out of sync with that part of quilting!

DeleteThis really is an example of the mantra, less is more! It is so simple yet so exquisite. The grey is a favourite of mine, and the little pops of colour work so well. I mostly use kona grey or kona snow for background.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think going simple is harder than throwing the kitchen sink in to the mix! It’s been so much fun for me. Kona grey in all shades is always a good background color to have on hand. And I always keep white and snow on hand just in case!
DeleteThose tiny dots of color add a ton of interest to your mini - I think it's fantastic! I keep several shades of gray in my stash. It's such a great color for so many reasons. Whites are still my BG color of choice, but once in a while I surprise myself and use something else. I love when that happens....not sure why I don't do it more often!
