My goal before the end of the year was to finish the last two. This was one of them. I don't think the Lilly Pilly pattern is readily available, but I'm sure if you search hard enough you might be able to find it.

I dug out this project in August (An Oldie :: But a Goodie) and went to town by finishing the applique on the majority of the pieces. Applique isn't my favorite thing to do, but I've always thought this project was worth finishing. So I was motivated...at least for a little while!
Then I promptly hung it on my design wall for four months! I guess it was my way of forcing my hand or guilting me into finishing it.
It's a happy bright quilt now! The time and effort that went into cutting each piece is crazy to think about! That part my daughter did, but I was involved in sticking them around the tree...years ago, that I remember!
I can almost hear the birds chirping with glee! Especially since after all these years they finally have eyes and legs! I machine stitched the legs using a straight line and going back and forth a few times. For the eyes I used one of the decorative stitches on my machine. It's like an asterisk (*). It was an easy way to add the detail and get ever closer to finally finishing!
Which brings us to the quilting! Oh Yikes!! Free motion. This design I'll call 'Herky Jerky Swirl'! There are a lot of jerky jagged not smooth curves happening! But you know what they say 'Done is better than perfect' and this baby is done!
I'm not the least disappointed with the quilting. Perhaps a wash and dry will mask the flaws!
See that quilt ladder? That was the reason I was locked in my sewing room by my husband right before Christmas. He wasn't wrapping presents, he was making me a quilt ladder!
We both work from home and neither of us are out of the house separately for long periods of time. Were always together. He works in his room, I work in my room and we meet in between for dinner!
He needed me in my room so I wouldn't hear the table saw and sander noise, which I did not. After I would go to bed, he would sand, router, drill...then stain, sand and top coat. I was oblivious as to what was going on. He was very clever and secretive!
A few years ago he made an 8 foot quilt ladder for the living room, and now I have a 6 foot ladder for my sewing room! Anyway...that was the big secret surprise. And it was a surprise indeed!

ReplyDeleteI was finally at the point (after years!) where it was time to get a couple lingering WIP’s finished once and for all! Afterwards I wondered why I hadn’t finished it sooner! It might have something to do with the fact that it wasn’t my project from the get go…but I love how it turned out!

ReplyDeleteIt feels so good to finally have this one finished! I just finished the last quilt Britt started and gave to me to finish…and thats the end of her WIP’s for me! It’s kind of sad, but mostly a huge relief! She and I haven't discussed where this quilt will end up. I say possession is 9/10’s of the law…her take on it might be different!

ReplyDeleteHi Jayne! That ladder is just fabulous, and even more so since it was a complete surprise. Aren't those just the best gifts?!! At this Lilly Pad has such a 60s vibe to me. All the beautiful bright colors are great, and so is your quilting. Once washed no one will ever notice some jerky swirls, and who cares anyway?!! I just enjoy the overall piece. ReplyDeleteI’m going to try and have a more positive outlook on my quilting this year! No regrets or apologies! It is what it is and as far as I’m concerned…it’s just fine! The ladder was a surprise! We talked about it months before hand but I never thought he would ever find the time to actually do it!
DeleteI had to giggle when I saw the ladder. I have had both of my sons try to make me one but they are too impatient! They didn't use a plan, tried to just slap something together and to this day, neither one is standing in my house. Your husband's ladder looks MARVELOUS! Did he design it himself or work with instructions? And I really like this quilt. You can't even see any bobbles. It looks great!

ReplyDeleteUntil my husband's last job change, we worked together at home too. It has its delights and challenges, and I miss him being around. That ladder is so nice; what a lovely surprise! The quilt is so happy and pretty with all that pink, and you've encouraged me to try free motion at some point, whether it comes out smooth or wobbly!

Thank you for sharing where people can get the Lilly Pilly pattern! If anyone is so inclined…they better go and snatch it up! While appliqué isn’t my favorite technique, I certainly did enjoy making (of finishing) this one!
DeleteThat is s nice surprise. I just bought myself s white quilt ladder after Christmas from a friend who was having a sale at her shop. I love love love that pink tree. I did a smaller fall version a few years ago and always thought it would be neat to do one for spring. I'll add it to my "one day" list.
