If you remember from my previous post Stash Busting HRT, I discovered how simple making HRTs is when you have the right tool. I used my HRTs using the Creative Grids Perfect Rectangle Ruler, seriously a game changer for me. Trying to line up HRTs can be a challenge for some of us! By using this ruler I achieved perfection with each block and didn't have to trim a single one!
When it came time to quilt or to make a decision on how to quilt this, as always I went back and forth with ideas. In the end I went with my usual tried and true favorite solution...good old straight lines.
After quilting in the ditch vertically between the blocks, I randomly selected rows where I added 1/2" lines. I really like 1/2" lines! However, I didn't want to do the entire quilt. So, I again randomly selected rows and added lines from 3/4" to 1" or more just for filler.
Just when I thought I was finished I had a brilliant idea! For added interest and I guess because I hadn't punished myself enough, I went wild and added some diagonal lines here and there. Now I was really done!
At least done with the quilting!
There was the back that needed addressing. I had a good stack of blocks leftover decided the best place for them to end up was on the back of the quilt instead of the back of the closet! The perfect solution in my opinion!
I still had scraps of the Alison Glass Handcrafted fabric leftover, which I will tell you were not wasted! I'll share that project after it's quilted...spoiler alert...it looks much like this quilt!
It feels good to work through my stash and while this fabric I love, I didn't want it hanging around any longer. I say it, you say it, we all say it...I'm determined to use my stash.
My next stash busting adventure is going to involve a bucket of woven stripes! Can't wait to deplete that stack!

ReplyDeleteI adore the way you quilted this one, Jayne. Throwing in those extra vertical lines randomly adds so much interest to the quilt -- I would have been driving myself crazy trying to space them perfectly 1/2" apart across the entire quilt, resulting in a much less dynamic feel to the piece. Same thing with those diagonal lines you threw in at the end -- genius!
ReplyDeleteAs far as being "determined to use my stash" -- Nope! Can't relate to that. My stash is mostly FQ or half yard pieces of prints that I love, neatly folded in wire drawer bins by color. I love pulling the drawers out and digging through to pull out fabrics for a project, and I feel sad when the last little scrap of a favorite fabric is gone. However, maybe I feel that way because I don't have a LQS near where I live. I only get to buy quilting fabric in person a couple times a year, and it's a Big Deal whole-day trip. I can order my solids online pretty easily from color cards etc., but my stash functions like a LQS that is right in my own home. For me, if I used up all or most of the fabric in my stash, I wouldn't have enough to pull from to make a quilt anymore!
I love the quilt and the way it is quilted.

DeleteWhat a great quilt, Jayne! The fabrics are nowhere near my normal. The colors and those HRTs are really working for me, for some reason. LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteThat is a really wonderful finish, Jayne! The bright prints really pop against the gray background - so eye-catching! I like the quilting, too - those diagonal lines are a fun surprise. Now you can look at your Allison Glass fabrics every time you use this quilt!
ReplyDeleteIt was so nice to finally use this fabric in a quilt. I get stressed when I see bundles sitting for too long! I’m pretty happy how it turned out. I’m glad I added the diagonal lines just for something different and unexpected!
DeleteI like the way this turned out! I guess I am a sucker for straight line quilting and use it almost exclusively. The diagonal quilting adds another little punch of interest to the finished product. I'm interested in the rectangle ruler.............do you have a source for that? Nadine W. rnwillis@velotech.net
ReplyDeleteAs I am aging I'm finding that brighter colors are more appealing to me. I do lots of QOV quilts so this would you up those scraps of fabric that seem to grow in your sewing room overnight. BTW you are sort of my neighbor as I live in Athens, AL

ReplyDeleteGreat idea on the straight line quilting! I do love those lines close together, but it does take time, so just adding a few is a great solution. Those fabrics though!! Love!
