Throw 'Back' Pillow

It's here again!  Throw Back Thursday  Yikes!

As I search out a throw back every month, I'm struck at just how far I've come.  Thankfully we learn a lot along the way, improve and grow...with that I give you 'The Purple People Eater'!

The year would be September 2011.  I was still in my batik phase, which isn't always bad. There was a time when I thought batiks were 'all that and a bag of chips'!

Bright, bold colors were used a lot even back then.  Strange color combinations too! That minty green is unsightly!

Improv was probably the one technique that opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of quilting.  It taught me (and continues to do so) that there aren't right or wrong ways, that thinking outside the box is always a good thing.

This I am 99% sure was my first attempt at pebbles free motion quilting!  There are even a few applique circles!

It's so funny looking back at these!  I guess I loved dense quilting back then too!  How could I not remember that?!  Either I'm getting old or...I'm just getting old!

As I rediscover these throwbacks, I actually get a little twinge of excitement.  Some of them make me want to take these ideas and run with them and others make me just want to run!!!

  1. I know what you mean about the throwback posts, Jayne. It is exciting to see how much growth we have all made, and it is also inspiring new ideas and paths to re-explore. I still love a good batik - nothing presses like them!

    1. I say it on every throwback post, but it's so true! I find it exciting to revisit some of them, and the progress and growth is amazing in us all! I don't hate Batiks, I just moved away from the and like to play around with them every so often!

  2. The way you quilted the pebbles to emphasize the applique circles was the perfect choice. Great pillow! And I still love batiks, glad to see more modern ones are coming out.

    1. I have been noticing the modern batiks lately! Love the geometrics…now I want to grab a bundle! The pebbles are more like boulders! I'm sure I went very, very, very slow on each one!

  3. Lets just say that The Purple People Eater wins the most original title ever :) Wholly cow those giant pebbles look great. I haven't got brave enough to make them large yet. I think I'm just getting ready to enter my batik phase.

    1. Okay, they are boulders…big, huge mega pebbles! What the hell did I know back then?!! LOL!! There has been a lot of strides in the batik world…geometrics and quite modern. I was always drawn to the colors, so gorgeous. I may have to break down and give them another try!

  4. Call me weird, but I like that little spot of minty green. It adds to the personality of the quilt. Go ahead cover it up, and you'll see. That little spark needs to be there. I'm glad to see that everyone starts somewhere with the pebbles--or maybe rocks? I haven't tried them yet. But again, they are just right on the pillow.

    1. Thankfully it is a small blotch of mint, I must have loved it at the time! Rocks... mine are boulders! Yikes!

  6. Hi Jayne, I definitely went through a batik stage too. I do love your circles though and your pebble quilting, very now.

  7. The terrible peril of all these Throwbacks is the inspiration one finds. And didn't we all have a batik phase? Thanks for linking up with Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge!
