When I decided to get it done once and for all, ideas came and went. Possibilities were there, my ability to execute those...well, not so much. In the end, I went with simple.
46 1/2" x 70" Denyse Schmidt ~ Florence |
I ended up marking lines vertically, horizontally and diagonally for quilting. Making sure to focus the attention on the stars. They are front and center after all!
With all the prints it's hard to see exactly how it was quilted. That was one of the reasons I opted to keep it simple. If you were able to get up close and personal with it, you would see the quilting created squares, rectangles and diamond shapes with all the intersecting of the lines.
In the end, I think it turned out pretty fine! I find when I use prints (which is not very often), I tend to keep the quilting simple. As opposed to solids, which I quilt the living hell out of!
The backing I ordered worked perfectly even though it was from a different line by Denyse Schmidt (Hadley).
The mission when I started making this quilt: Use my 'CASUAL LINK' block I designed to see if it would actually look good in a quilt. And to use a fat quarter bundle of Denyse Schmidt ~ Florence I had for far too long. Mission accomplished!
The back received every last usable piece I had left. I wouldn't want any scraps hanging around!

I like the detail that the quilting adds to the stars. Geometric patterns are really fascinating to me, and I think your quilting choice was lovely. Congratulations on a great finish!
ReplyDeleteI wanted geometric without having to work too hard at it! Lazy…perhaps! The main goal was to show something in the stars, and that was achieved!
DeleteHi! This is adorable and your photos are beautifu! x Teje
ReplyDeleteI try to get clear and accurate photos, it can be a challenge!
DeleteYeah for a finish! Great quilting choice. It's a great quilt.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I say! This quilt needed to be finished and I seriously am pleased with it! Time to move on...
DeleteYum! What a great finish. The design, colors and quilting all work perfectly together.
ReplyDeleteFor someone who doesn't work with prints…this was a challenge! I have to say, I love the color combination. (I'm not an 'orange' person!) If I hadn't had a coordinating bundle, I wold most likely still be picking fabrics!
DeleteYou always have the best pictures, so clear and great lighting. I love the oranges with the grays in this quilt. I think the quilting you chose for this one was perfect.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy trying to get the best, accurate and clear shots I can! Some days is easier than others! I think the quilting was the right choice for this busy quilt too!
DeleteLove, love love!
ReplyDeleteAwesome quilt and quilting!!! I added it to my Pinterest board so I can see it often. Beautiful!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful! I think the quilting is just perfect for this top!
ReplyDeleteI think is was a good choice for this quilt too! Since the quilting part is a challenge for me and the quilt has a lot of prints…I had to go simple!
DeleteFabulous quilt, and orange is um not my preferred colour! I just finished the quilting on a little quilt and I did diagonal straight lines too, and I'm pleasantly surprised with the effect on front and back. Yours looks great! Great block too. :-)
ReplyDeleteOrange isn't my favorite color either! It I hadn't had the bundle, I doubt I would have picked this color combination…I'd still be picking fabric! Even though it's just straight line quilting, you can get some fabulous shapes and designs with it.
DeleteJust beautiful and the quilting is perfect! I also love how you pieced the backing.
ReplyDeleteOh my! Those stars do shine! This turned out beautifully. And I love the back as much as the front, too. Simple quilting gets my vote!
ReplyDeleteJayne, this is a serious winner. I mean, it is gorgeous. You really need to make it into a pattern - lots of people would buy it. And I love the quilting, it's perfect. AWESOME JOB!!
ReplyDeleteit's really, really pretty! what a wonderful block design - perfect match for some denyse. and i think your quilting choice was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous! I love the stars and their orange centers...and the DS is a great fit with your pattern!
ReplyDeletePerfect quilting for this quilt. I love it.
ReplyDeleteI've never worked with any Denyse Schmidt fabrics, but have admired them from afar for a long time now. This turned out really nice, and that's an interesting observation between quilting simple with prints or heavy quilting with solids. I've not really warmed up to solids yet, and struggle to figure out how to make them work in a project. So... just one more thing to admire from afar. Congrats on your finish!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how I never think to do straight line quilting in my own projects but whenever I see it in other people's projects I absolutely love it. This is a great finish and I love the backing.
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is gorgeous! Although they aren't colors or fabrics I'm normally drawn too, in this setting, they are perfect! Fantastic job.
ReplyDeleteOK, Orange IS my favorite color and I am a big fan of straight line quilting (cannot do FMQ). So, if you are having second thoughts...ahem, I can help you ;-)
ReplyDeleteMost importantly - where can I get that pattern?
