Welcome to my blog! But mostly...welcome to the Fabri-Quilt New Blog Block Hop! This promises to be an amazing show of creativity! With over 60 participants sharing their blocks over a 4 day period, there will be some ‘hopping” to be had!
Today, I would like to share my block 'CASUAL LINK', along with a semi-simple tutorial!
CASUAL LINK 12 1/2" x 12 1/2 Unfinished |
This block is all about secondary designs. While interesting on it's own, it becomes amazing when more and more blocks are added! (really!)
We were generously supplied 6 - fat eights from Fabri-Quilt, Inc. The rules for this challenge: Use at least 3 of the colors, make the block 12 1/2” unfinished (12" finished) and write a tutorial. Piece of cake!!!
CUTTING:
White:
2 - 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" Squares
4 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
6 - 2" x 2" Squares
Teal:
4 - 4 1/2 x 4 1/2 Squares
2 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
Blue:
1 - 4 1/2" x 4 1/2 Squares
2 - 2" x 2" Squares
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
Step #1:
Once all your pieces are cut, mark a diagonal line on the 2" and 2 1/2" inch squares.
I use this method for sewing the corners.
Step #2:
Follow the diagram below for corner placement. Sew, trim and press corners.
Sew (1) 2” blue square to each 4 1/2” white square
Sew (1) 2” and (1) 2 1/2” white square to each of the (4) 4 1/2” teal squares
Sew (2) 2 1/2” teal squares to the 4 1/2” blue square
Step #3:
Sew (1) blue and (1) teal 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” rectangles together. Press.
Step #4:
Sew (1) white 2” square to the corner of the teal. Press.
Step #5:
Block Assembly. Following the layout below, sew each row of blocks. Press.
Step #6:
Sew Rows together.
Alternative Block:
The only change is the middle top and bottom blocks. Assemble the rectangles the same as above, except change the placement of the corner.
In the end, there are so many different layouts you can achieve with this block!
This layout is with one block, rotated throughout the quilt.
Perhaps a two color quilt?
When you combine the original block with the alternative block, you get yet another design!
...this plus this...
Equals this!
I wasn't sure if this block would work in a quilt, one never knows! I ended up making a quilt to prove to myself...it would work! I'll give the quilt it's own 'spotlight' in a later post, for now...enjoy the HOP!

LINKING:
Wow, Jayne, I would probably call this block "linked" or "scroll" or something like that - when combined into a quilt it looks like beautifully intricate wrought iron work and just makes me jump back to memories of time on my grandmother's porch. Wow. Delightful block, tutorial, and thumbs up for giving me goosebumps with memories!
ReplyDeleteThis was such a hard challenge! I am so happy it evoked some wonderful memories for you, what better compliment could there be?!
DeleteWow it looks so great when repeated. It reminds me of something Moroccan inspired

You are absolutely an overachiever, friend, and I'm glad to count you as mine! Beautiful block, and I would have had no idea how versatile it was if you hadn't put it all together to see the secondary patterns. Bravo!!
ReplyDeleteLet's talk overachievers Julie! I take after you! I was bound and determined to do something new and different! I had no idea it would be so difficult in the beginning! Happily its a block I love, one that works and one that I'm anxious to make again!
DeleteOh wow, what a cool block! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWow Jayne! You are right that this block which is interesting on it's own, is truly awesome when the blocks are sewn together. Love the yellow and grey version.
ReplyDeleteThis is phenomenal! I am in love with the first layout in blue and your quilt top made with Florence! I can't wait to see more. You are so incredibly clever. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time figuring out this block, then wondering if it was something that could look good and work in a quilt! There was little choice…I had to try it out! Turns out, it worked and I got to finally use that stack of Florence!
DeleteI love this block! I love the red and white version. It looks like links to me, so maybe Links.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! It really does look amazing when made into a quilt!!
ReplyDeleteWowzers! This is great! I can't wait to see more about this block.
ReplyDeleteGreat block, I love the results!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! This is FAB-YOO-LOUS! I first saw a racetrack (probably all the races I've been dragged, er gone to over the years with my husband, just kidding, seriously, love the track) but when you put the blocks together in the first digital mockup I went Wow! aloud, and then the love and amazement continued as I got on down to your quilt! Going on the to-do list...make that to-do tome!
ReplyDeleteI see a race track too! I couldn't be more pleased with this block! I had my doubts, but after seeing the quilt top…I'm in love! I believe I will make this block again! Have fun at the racetrack! I hope you get to make this…and I hope you share it with me!
DeleteFabulous design and love all your layout!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, your block is all about the secondary design when it plays with its siblings. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteWow! I hope when your beautiful quilt gets it's own spotlight, we get to hear a bit of how this wonderful block developed and came to be! How fun!
ReplyDeleteFabulous block! It reminds me of the infinity symbol, and with so many layout options, maybe you can call it your Infinite Possibilities block.
ReplyDeleteGreat block design! Love the secondary pattern and your version in pink and grey!
ReplyDeleteHow freakin' cool is that?!
ReplyDeleteThis block has such wow factor! It's just amazing. Coming up with a name for my blocks was so hard. When I first saw this I though of "Crazy Eights" since at first glance I saw the number 8.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great block! I like how the figure 8 in the base block is converted into star patterns when the blocks are combined.
ReplyDeleteWhat amazing settings for you block! Love the 'proof' quilt.
ReplyDeleteWell that's very cool! It makes an interesting design. Loving the grey and yellow ; )
ReplyDeleteLove it! Your secondary designs are awesome. Will definitely put this on my to-do list:) (Boy, that list is getting looooong!)

ReplyDeleteYou are my favorite out of todays group.
ReplyDeleteWow Jayne, that is a wicked cool block - did you do the block and then the whole pattern, or did you draw the pattern and then have to figure out the block? It looks so complicated but your directions make it seem to simple! Super job - I love it!
ReplyDeleteHi there and thank you for the welcome to your blog! I loved your block, it would be great as a red and white quilt. I always plan to make a red and white quilt, and I love blocks that look like floor tiles. Thank you as well for the Pinterest board, great idea to put them all together there. I have never quite mastered pinterest, I always get "lost". Now I'm off to read your last post, being a hexiephile!
ReplyDeleteWowza! It's amazing to see what comes out of a single block. The play on different colors really helps show the versatility of this pattern!
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing design for a quilt block. At first glance, I was not really interested...but also know that in order to see a designs potential you have to continue until the end...and WOW did you prove that this is an amazing block that creates a spectacular quilt! Thank you for your artistic design for this block and quilt. Have a wonderful creative day!
ReplyDeleteHi, very neat! Love how this block turned out for you! Thanks for sharing!

This is a totally synergy block. On it's own it does not look like much but when you combine it with others, the total result is much more than just the sum.
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial!
I absolutely love the design the block forms in a quilt! It is just awesome!
ReplyDeleteLove your block, especially in red. I want to try using this block myself. Thanks for an awesome block and tutorial.
ReplyDeleteOk, the blocks just keep getting better and better! I love all the layout possibilities base on color positioning. I love, love the alternative block design. I admit it, I am drooling over your design. Congrats, this is a winner!
ReplyDeleteWhat an intricate design! I admit I was skeptical when I first saw the block, but it does make for a great secondary pattern!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing block. You did an awesome job!!
ReplyDeleteI love the secondary pattern the block creates.
ReplyDeleteThis block seems so simple but then as a whole quilt! WOW! Such a great secondary design and at 12" this block would be a really fun, quick and impactful for a large quilt!
ReplyDeleteOh my wow! This block really comes alive when tiled in a full quilt top! I love the three color blue version. Well done!
ReplyDeleteStunning!! Stunning stunning stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteXX!
Lori
Wow, what a clever block. So many possibilities for layouts and I love your examples.
ReplyDeleteJayne, I don't know if it's possible to fall in love with someone because of a potholder, but that's exactly what I did a couple of years ago :) I saw those mini-mini quilts of yours on Pinterest and was immediately smitten! with your style. I don't know why it never occurred to me that you had a blog--but now I know! Casual Link is such a versatile block--as a beginner I can see that mastering this will open up a lot of possibilities! (And, I promise, I'm not a stalker! :)
ReplyDeleteWow Jayne what a neat looking block and what you can do with the layout is amazing. Thank you so much for the inspirational block.
ReplyDeleteLovely block you have designed and so great to see it 'virtually' in different colourways and layouts. The quilt you have made from it is just stunning - congrats!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite layout is the two-toned blues, and I really love how you've broken the block down - it looks much more complicated at first glance!
ReplyDeleteBefore I scanned further down, I thought "this block is going to have so many cool effect, depending on how you lay it out!" And wow it sure does Jayne! Wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteLove this!! Definitely one of the best of the hop!
