I'm going to share my block for the event, and I encourage you to check out all the other participants from yesterday, today and tomorrow! There promises to be some amazing blocks and always a ton of creativity!
Midnight, Daydream, White, Peach, Coral, Bordeaux |
I've named my block ASCEND. To go up, rise or move toward the sky. Much like that of a bird gliding across the water.
ASCEND 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" Unfinished |
CUTTING:
White:
4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
16 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
Midnight:
6 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
Daydream:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
Peach:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
2 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
Coral:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
2 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
Step #1:
Once you have all you pieces cut, mark a diagonal line on the 16 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" white squares. These will be the 'sky' to the 'geese' for the Flying Geese blocks.
Step #2:
Following the diagram below for the Flying Geese Assembly, place one white (2 1/2" x 2 1/2") square on the corner of each blue (2 1/2" x 4 1/2") rectangle, stitch along the marked line, trim and press seams open. Repeat on the opposite side to complete the Geese blocks.
You will end up with six (6) Midnight Blue and two (2) Daydream Blue units.
Step #3:
Layout your pieces following the diagram below. Stitch each row together using 1/4" scant seam. Press seams open.
Step #4:
Sew each row together to complete your 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished block.
Naturally I have to give some examples of how this block would look in a completed quilt, right?! Using this exact color scheme it might look something like this:

Love your block, Jayne! I'm thinking it might be nice for my mini challenge, but I don't want to steal your thunder if you are planning to use it.
ReplyDeleteIt's always stressful designing a new block! I feel like they have a lll been done. I did make a quilt using this block (which I'll share soon), but please feel free to use it for your project!
DeleteGreat block, Jayne! I totally see a gull flying over the water with his shadow reflected back at him! Great use of color and pattern!
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard designing a block that has never been done before! I'm so glad the vision carried over to the block!
DeleteI really like how the dark "X" shape of your block looks layered and twisted and hanging on to the background. This is a great design, and thank you so much for joining the hop!
ReplyDeleteThank you and thanks for having me on the New Block Blog Hop again! Its hard designing new blocks, but very rewarding when they work!
DeleteI love this, Jayne! I like how the blocks come together and make a plus sign and the geese kind of make a flying bird shape. I look at this and think...all the quilting possibilities!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it hard designing blocks?!! I'll be sharing a version of this block in a quilt very soon. I like that there are so many possibilities with blocks and fabric choices really change the look of a design!
DeleteFabulous block.I spy flying geeses and love all your layout.Great job!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a fun challenge! It always takes a while to settle on a design for a block, but when it works it feels wonderful!
Deletethis is such a fun block. thanks for sharing with us.

I love blocks with possibilities!
DeleteWow, Jayne, you weren't kidding when you said our blocks had similar qualities. What can I say, great minds think alike. :) I really like how your secondary "plus" has more visual interest with the different colors (unlike mine which is all 1 color).
ReplyDeleteI told you! How crazy is that? I find it so hard to make a 'new' block, but when it's finished and actually works…it makes me very happy and relieved! I made a quilt with my block which I'll share soon. Totally different from the tutorial colors!
DeleteStriking!!! I like it, thanks for sharing!

Interesting seeing the top in different colorways.
ReplyDeleteI can totally see the bird. Fantastic block!
ReplyDeleteWell, I see the bird and its reflection, but I also see a layering effect, as if the white is on top of the blue or the blue bird has hooked its wings over the top of the white 'wall'. :-) Great block Jayne.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great block Jayne. This block has so many options with fabric play and layout.
ReplyDeleteGreat block and great new block blog hop! Interesting too reading what others see when they look at it made up into a quilt - for me it's quite Mexican or Ikat and if I look long enough I see moustaches and even men with their arms folded, maybe I should drink less coffee? ;D Thanks so much for linking up at Sew Cute Tuesday today - Chris (guest host) @madebyChrissieD :D
ReplyDeleteGreat block, Jayne! I love the secondary patterns, and how much the bird shapes stand out.
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Gosh. I cannot believe how much I love this! Wow. You are so amazing at these challenges. You MUST start making patterns Jayne. This is too fabulous. No exaggeration, I mean it!
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome block! I love seeing it rendered in the different colorways.
ReplyDeleteGreat block! I love seeing it tiled and with different colors!
ReplyDeleteNeat block! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis is another winner Jayne! I don't know how you come up with these blocks that repeat in the most interesting ways!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic block! I particularly like the way you have configured the central flying geese.
ReplyDeleteJayne, the reflection is perfect! Great design!
ReplyDeleteStop it!! What a cool block!! Man, in black and white it would also be such a stunner!! XO!
ReplyDeleteHi Jayne, I really like this block, and you write a mean tutorial!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great block Jayne. It looks wonderful in the quilt layouts.
ReplyDeleteGreat block Jayne!! It's got great shapes in it and your alternative colors really show off different ways you can work with this block. Thanks so much for sharing it with us on the hop
ReplyDeleteWhen first looked at your block, I thought "Wow. That's way too complicated for me to make!" But when I saw the flying geese in the breakdown, it seems a lot more doable!
ReplyDeleteLove your block!! It's awesome.
ReplyDeleteGreat block!
