I'm going to share my block for the event, and I encourage you to check out all the other participants from yesterday, today and tomorrow! There promises to be some amazing blocks and always a ton of creativity!

I've named my block ASCEND. To go up, rise or move toward the sky. Much like that of a bird gliding across the water.

CUTTING:
White:
4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
16 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
Midnight:
6 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
Daydream:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
Peach:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
2 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
Coral:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
2 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares
Step #1:
Once you have all you pieces cut, mark a diagonal line on the 16 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" white squares. These will be the 'sky' to the 'geese' for the Flying Geese blocks.
Step #2:
Following the diagram below for the Flying Geese Assembly, place one white (2 1/2" x 2 1/2") square on the corner of each blue (2 1/2" x 4 1/2") rectangle, stitch along the marked line, trim and press seams open. Repeat on the opposite side to complete the Geese blocks.
You will end up with six (6) Midnight Blue and two (2) Daydream Blue units.
Step #3:
Layout your pieces following the diagram below. Stitch each row together using 1/4" scant seam. Press seams open.
Step #4:Sew each row together to complete your 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished block.
Naturally I have to give some examples of how this block would look in a completed quilt, right?! Using this exact color scheme it might look something like this:

Love your block, Jayne! I'm thinking it might be nice for my mini challenge, but I don't want to steal your thunder if you are planning to use it.
ReplyDeleteIt's always stressful designing a new block! I feel like they have a lll been done. I did make a quilt using this block (which I'll share soon), but please feel free to use it for your project!

DeleteI love this, Jayne! I like how the blocks come together and make a plus sign and the geese kind of make a flying bird shape. I look at this and think...all the quilting possibilities!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it hard designing blocks?!! I'll be sharing a version of this block in a quilt very soon. I like that there are so many possibilities with blocks and fabric choices really change the look of a design!

DeleteWow, Jayne, you weren't kidding when you said our blocks had similar qualities. What can I say, great minds think alike. :) I really like how your secondary "plus" has more visual interest with the different colors (unlike mine which is all 1 color).
ReplyDeleteI told you! How crazy is that? I find it so hard to make a 'new' block, but when it's finished and actually works…it makes me very happy and relieved! I made a quilt with my block which I'll share soon. Totally different from the tutorial colors!

ReplyDeleteWell, I see the bird and its reflection, but I also see a layering effect, as if the white is on top of the blue or the blue bird has hooked its wings over the top of the white 'wall'. :-) Great block Jayne.
