Throw Back ~ Not Throw Away!

Here we are, ready for the first link to Throwback Thursday!  Jenn who always has an action pack, humorous and beautiful blog:  A Quarter Inch From The Edge, has started a fun linky party!  It's about sharing your quilts from yesteryear that haven't been shown to the world for some reason or another.  As Jenn says, 'the good, the bad the ugly'!

My first throwback is a quilt that I made in 2010 and I adore it!  BOHEMIAN CHURN DASH!

78" x 96"
After collection some gorgeous fabrics, Anna Maria Horner, Kaffe Fassett prints and Shot Cottons and Gee's Bend solids I was on the look out for a pattern.  I happened upon this one that I found in American Patchwork & Quilting (APQ) 2008 issue.  I couldn't resist the urge, with the help of my daughter we set about cutting and cutting and cutting!  I think this was my first serious, intense project.

I also think this may have been when I started to have a clue about what I liked and didn't like.  It took a while to get to that point, believe me I couldn't have been happier that I finally 'grew' some taste and style!

The Churn Dash block is an old classic.  It will always be around.  You can modify and modernize this oldie in so many ways.  I like blocks like this!

How about some firsts?  You remember your first, right?!  No that!!  This was the first time I used a silk batting.  It was Hobbs Tuscany Silk Batting to be exact!  It is all silk fibers with a polyester scrim.  It's very light and breathable, so is good for warmer weather.  It was also decided half way through piecing of this quilt, that I was going to get it long arm quilted.

My daughter Britt, lived in Indiana back in 2010.  She worked at a quilt shop and suggested a lady named Kathy for the quilting.  I took her advice and could be any happier with the final results!  It's all freehand too!

I use to add tags like this back then!  If I made you a quilt...you are going to always know it was made my me!

Since 2010, this quilt has been on our bed.  (I have washed it)  It's a quilt that I am super proud of!  It never grows old, it's always beautifully bright and it keeps me warm while I sleep.

Quilts come and go.  Some I liked, some I loved.  Some I wonder WTF was I thinking? That's the way it goes, I guess!  This one I am sure I will love forever, until it is a heap of tattered threads!

  2. The minute I saw the intro pic, I thought "That has a Kaffe Fassett feel to it" and in the next line, I see his fabrics are in it! It's a beauty... such colour saturation. Thanks for linking up to Throwback Thursday. I've seen the good... now next month you are charged with the bad or the the ugly!

    1. I'll try and work up the courage, humble myself and bite the bullet next time with a quilt that is not my best! Which I have plenty of. I'll have to search the archives of my pictures, since most of those quilts were gifts for family! They were so lucky!

  3. I love that this is still on your bed. The colors are so warm and cheery it must be a delight to walk into the room and see! I've had a quilt on our bed since 2004 and other than needing to rebind it, it has held up really well.

    1. We rarely make anything for ourself! This is one that will always be on my bed, and if it isn't…I would be so sad! I can't imagine replacing it with anything better!

  6. Hi Jayne! I love this quilt! Very beautiful colours that your never get tired to look as the fabrics of course, too. I love also this pattern which I haven't done yet. My first quilts were two summer quilts. As it's very hot here in Greece, I made them without any batting, just the quilt tops and backing fabric. I think they were good project for starting. Them I were able to quilt by my machine but since then I have quilted by hand (using also the wadding). x teje

  8. I just LOVE this quilt! I have marked it as unread in my feed so I see it over and over again! I have been contemplating a churn dash quilt using different sized blocks. Yours is a wonderful example!

  10. This is gorgeous! I love the way the rich colours and patterns play together. I've never heard of silk batting before but will have to look for some - I really like the idea of lighter weight quilts for the summer months.
