Challenge Improv

My guild (Music City Modern Quilt Guild) decided to participate in the Modern Quilt Guild's Charity Challenge.  The challenge:  A collaborative effort using a predetermined color palette and Improv With Intent.  The quilt will eventually be donated to a local charity.  Easy right? 

 Once an idea was settled on, we were free to do what we do...quilt!  As you know, I do my fair share of improv.  What I don't do is improv specific shapes.  

These are the predetermined colors.  Solids are good!  White, off white, sunflower, tomato red, light teal, grey and black.  Coordinating prints are also allowed.  

Ladies and gentlemen...we got a theme!

This was my first attempt.  It worked pretty well, but I was going crazy trying to figure out how to pull it off.


The second one went a little better.  I'm trying to make each one different and unique.
Hash tag?  No, but it could be.  Let's call this a Sharp Music Note!


This one would be my stealth note!  Kinda funky, kinda weird, but sleek!

I have a couple more I need to make before our next meeting, so I better get busy!  

The more I look at the notes, the more I like them!  Seeing them all together gives me ideas and right now...I don't have time for new ideas!  ARGH!  I really would love to make these into paper pieced patterns.  Which I have never done before!     

My husband thinks they're 'cute'.  Cute!  I can hear the gears turning in his head on this one! He's a musician and his job is to make things perfect...I'm sure these notes are throwing him for a loop and probably make no sense at all to him!

    What a fun theme, and I like that is is improv. The pops of color are going to really make this a stunning quilt, I think.

      We kind of had to hit on 'music' considering we are in Nashville! I can't wait to see what everyone else makes!

    I think if you keep going, you could create a piece that he could play. Then it would move from "cute" to a great piece of improv jazz AND quilting!

      If I had an actual piece of sheet music I might be able to make something he could recognize! It is hard for non-quilters to see the bigger picture sometimes!

    Those are too cool! I've never really tried improve quilting before, so my little mind is blown as to how you did it. I can't wait to see the rest when you are finished.

      I think I may have blown my own mind too Tish! Even with the frustration of figuring it out, it was fun and I do really like the blocks!

    Man, Jayne, I absolutely LOVE these notes. They are funky and sleek, and super modern. I'm guessing you paper pieced them? You get so much done so fast - I thought I was fast but you take the cake, girl.

      The more I look at them, the more I like them! I want to make a paper pieced pattern for the notes, but all of them are improv. No pattern. Just winging it!

    I love them. I totally understand not having time for new ideas! I need to finish all the ideas from the last year or so, then we can move on to new ideas!

      If I'm being honest, I have more ideas than I could ever put out! Every once in a while one pops in my head that has to be done right that moment!

    Fun! Those colors look so good on white and the notes are great. It would be fun to see a whole quilt like this :)

      They were all improv, I figured it out as I went along! I would love to make a paper pieced pattern so I could make them again…one day perhaps!

    Your sheet music inspired blocks are GREAT! They would make for a lovely pattern for quilting musicans :)

      I would love to make these again one day. A paper pieced pattern would be perfect, I just need to learn how to do that!
