As promised, I have an actual Lap Quilt finish! I had high hopes for this quilt and in the end I'm not totally thrilled with the end results.
45 1/2" x 70"
By end results I mean the quilting. I took the easy route and did horizontal straight lines in varying widths. It's a nice quilt, but a cop out on the quilting! Oh well, it's a finish and I'm happy for that!
I have quilts where this kind of quilting is perfect, and then quilts that seem like I'm fighting it. We fought a good battle and I'm afraid...the quilt kicked my butt!
I might be too hard on myself, as many of us can be. Trust me when I say I'm not beating myself up over it.
I'm happy with the 'pretty' of this quilt and know that I have one more in the wings waiting to show itself! My 'purple majesty' (which for now is what I'll call it!) is still waiting on it's debut. The fabric for that one finally shipped today!
We put so much into each and every quilt we make and always want it perfect in the end. But...sometimes we fall short of our expectations. I'm 100% fine with what I did and always chalk it up to lesson learned! I'm going for the 'glass half full' optimistic view this year!

I love this quilt! It is cheery and happy.
ReplyDeleteI love it too and hope I didn’t come off as too negative! I like to share the good and the bad about my quilting adventures!
DeleteI think this is a really pretty piece--I don't see anything bad about the quilting;
ReplyDeleteI think it looks fine...hugs, Julierose
You're right about this being a great design, and those colors are oo-la-la by my way of thinking. But I get what you mean about quilting. Years ago I read the book "Quilting Makes the Quilt" by Lee Cleland, and from it learned exactly what the title says. Doing what needs to be done to finish a quilt is different from doing what will enhance a quilt. Don't get me wrong... I love what you've done here! But I also completely understand. I'm looking forward to what you make next. I'm getting ready to take another workshop with Maria Shell, and am excited already about whatever patterned improv design comes out of it. Happy creating to us!
ReplyDeleteI think it is gorgeous! We all tend to get a little hard on ourselves sometimes when things don't turn out as great as we imagined. There is always next time, LOL Not every quilt needs over the top quilting. I am glad you are not beating yourself up over it;)
ReplyDeleteIt's a beauty! I do know what you mean about not having the greatest feelings when a project is done. It's all a learning experience, even if you've made a thousand quilts. This will be loved and admired and is perfect in its own unique way!
ReplyDeleteThis quilt just says Be Happy to me. I don't mind the quilting at all, but I do understand how you are processing the finish. I'll bet you will assess the quilting of Purple Majesty a bit differently, so I'd say this quilt is helping with that. It's a winner!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is fantastic! The colors you combined are beautiful, and I love how the different sizes of blocks fit together. Great finish!
ReplyDeleteThe pieced backing is very happy, and I'm glad to hear you aren't beating yourself up over the quilting. I've had that feeling before too... and I've also had to change my plan from what I wanted, and begrudgingly had to admit it was for the best in the end. Crazy how quilts can talk to us!
ReplyDeleteIts such a happy quilt tho - and great colors!! it could be a color study in itself! Now that you see the quilting - what would have quilted it with to make you like it better?
ReplyDeleteI love the colors so much and the back is perfect. I'm planning to warp up those colors on my loom for towels! I saved your quilt as a reference
ReplyDeleteIt really is a lovely quilt, but I know what you mean. been there!
ReplyDeleteOooo!! I really love this. Of course, I don't have the mind's eye expectation of what you were envisioning, so I get the advantage of only seeing the great parts. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt. If it's giving you attitude, feel free to send it to me... ;-). I am so curious, though -- now that it's finished and you have, if not regrets, then "mixed feelings" about your horizontal line quilting -- if you had it to do over again and time was NOT a factor, what kind of quilting do you feel would have "made" the quilt instead of "breaking" it?
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool! I love the colors and the design.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, I think the quilt is really pretty. The design, fabrics, colors, quilting, everything.
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled with it! The color palette is such a tropical, fun palette for this time of the year! I'm sure you're loving it more as time and distance goes on. Such fun and random quarter square log cabin blocks.
