Round Robin :: It's a Success!

It's hard to believe this Round Robin hosted though my local guild has come to an end.  By end, I mean we have completed each round and the quilt has been returned to the original owner.  It's over, but there's a lot of work yet to do!  Should I add more to it or quilt it as is?!  Choices I have yet to make!

The challenge started in February with the construction of our center blocks.  We had our group of six that we would swap with roughly every month give or take.  Time for each round was set pretty loose.

This was my center block.  The only rule I had was to have fun, no pressure and enjoy it!  You can read about my block here: Round Robin :: My First.  That's easier said than done!  I felt pressure every single round!  I didn't want to disappoint or mess anything up!

Wanna see how it all came together after all the rounds?  You'll be surprised!  I was!  I intentionally avoided seeing round because I wanted it to be a surprise at the end.   Here it is!

What a transformation!  A metamorphosis took place with each round, slowly changing the vibe and design!  How fun it's been seeing what each person added for their round.

I was thrilled to see that each person wrote a little something about round.  It's a very nice touch for this kind of challenge I think.

A few detail shots!  Love the drunkards path butterfly from Marcia!  Emily added the last round of geese.  She used fabric from her previous rounds in the geese!  Libby did the round next to the geese.  Hers reminded me of a quilt I recently finished called 'Finely Tuned'.

Katie added the pink 'ombre' stripes (above) and the Anna Maria Horner stripes (bottom).  Gotta love plus blocks!  Maria added those along with her usual sassy rebel-ness!

I don't think it will happen anytime soon, but I will do another Round Robin one day!  It was all you'd expect...stress, stress and stress!  But, it was also worth it, fun, challenging and rewarding!  Thank you ladies for making my first the best!

Here are some of the other quilts from our group:

Marcia's Quilt

Katie's Quilt

Emily's Quilt

Stay tuned for Libby and Maria's!  I told you we were playing it loose!!

This is from the other Round Robin Group, Debbie's quilt!  It's fun and festive!

I wrote about each round on my blog if you'd like to read more about it!

I think for my rounds, each one I added somehow was tied to a project I was working on at the time or had just finished up!

When I do another Round Robin there are a few things I will do differently.

First, try not to stress as much.  It won't work, but it's worth a try!

Decide if I want to see the progress after each round.  If not, be sure and state that.

Give more direction, not much just enough to guide whoever is in line.  That could be in the form of colors, fabrics or shapes.  Then maybe they won't have to stress as much.

If I would like a certain background, include fabric to keep it consistent.

Include a note (which I did this time) with my wishes, thoughts and ideas.  And then...be sure to ask each participant to write something about their experience with their round.

I was perfectly happy to let everyone do what they felt and wished with my block.  I didn't want to give too many rules that would make it too serious.  A few guidelines are not a bad thing!

When will I ever do another one?!  I'm not sure.  Would you want to join in with a Round Robin?  If you hear of one going on, I wouldn't mind hearing about it!

Round Robin :: Round Three

Ahead of schedule, ahead of the game!  I've been trying to clear up, clean up and get caught up with several projects this past week.  Including preparing for a couple workshops.
Next weekend our Guild is hosting Latifah Saafir.  I am looking forward to meeting and learning from her.  We have a Glam Clam workshop, a Bias Tape workshop and of course a lecture and trunk show.  I'll most certainly let you know how it goes and share some pictures!

So, because of all the hub-bub going on I needed to finish my Round Robin Round earlier than I normally would.

21" x 21"
This is my starting point, my starting block.  Maria's block if a pretty one!  An on point 'X' block variation. A little floral, a little solids.  Which is good for those of us who love one or the other (or both!).

It appears this block/quilt is going to end up full of color magic!  Emily had the round before me and as always she likes to mix it up!  It took a while for me to think this one through.  But you know how it is when you get an idea and it won't let go...

At first I was trying to find a suitable print that matched in color to the starting block.  With my stash, that was not going to happen!

And then I came across these extra HST's from my 'Wanta Fanta' quilt.  I saved them knowing full well one day I would use those little extras for something.  This seemed like the perfect opportunity to do just that.  I love when I can use scraps!

I trimmed each one to a whopping 1 1/2" square and then stitched two together to make a ribbon like block.  I'm sure the block actually has a name, but I'm calling it the Ribbon Effect...whether it is or not!

Before the ribbon blocks, I added a 2" white border.  I think it will keep it light and airy, plus it will let each round stand out.

Once I figured out the math for the white piece in between each ribbon block (believe me it wasn't easy!), I pieced the strips and added that around all four sides.

And as the final touch, another 2" border. I think it works, I think!  So, there you have the madness behind the scenes!

29" x 29" After Round Three
Again, I'm looking forward to the next block to work on and you know...I'll be sharing that one too!

Round Robin :: Round Two

Ready for another installment of Round Robin?  For those who have done these before, should round two be easier?  I feel like each round comes with it's own set of worries!

I've had an entire month to figure out the next move,and as always I wait until the last possible moment to get my round done.

16 1/2" x 16 1/2" Starting Size
This is Libby's block.  I was sure this was going to be a fun block to play around with.  The multicolored dot fabric came with Libby's starting block.  As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to somehow use it in my round.

I like how Emily added the three flying geese in the first round.  The colors pulled straight from the dots.

Whatever will I do!!

Why...add more color of course!  I pulled Kona Capri, Moda Lime (I think), Kona Storm and I'll use Kona Snow for the background of my contribution.

These blocks are 2 1/2" unfinished and are the same size as Libby's center block size.  It would work perfectly for my idea.

The chevron block was the first block I made.  I wanted to add more dark blue, but didn't want to overwhelm the rest of the block.

This is a perfect combination of colors!  Lime green is my favorite color and it's also one of the colors in the dot fabric.  More colors, more blue, more dots!

24 1/2" x 24 1/2" - After Round Two
Half way through I was getting a festive party vibe and started calling it the 'Party Quilt'!

Libby, I hope you like it!

I'll be handing this off today and also picking up the next round!  Round Three!

Round Robin :: Round 1

No one said it would be easy!!  The pressure alone is enough to put one over the edge!  I was sure I'd have my round in the bag, feeling confident and sure of my contribution, but it only left me unsure I made the right decision!
Starting Block Size: 15 1/2" x 12 1/2"
I was entrusted with this starting block.  Pretty cool, right?!  I was blow away with what Emily made because first it is cool, second it was her first time making the blocks.  No applique here!

I went back and forth on what to do.  First I thought I would make circles, then it was half circles, perhaps flying geese.  It was a strike out!  All three didn't feel right.

Mini Trajectory or Boomerang blocks came to mind and so I went to work.  After making a few scrappy blocks...it still felt wrong.  I still liked the idea, just not the randomness of the block.  I let it stew over night and got back to it in the morning.

The toned down version!  I think I can make these work!  Emily's blocks are 3" and I wanted to keep the scale pretty much the same.

Much better in my opinion!  Which is to say...I'm still freaked about my contribution!  If it was mine I wouldn't fret, but it isn't and so I shall worry and fret and freak out for a while!
Size After Round 1: 21 1/2" x 18"
I'm going to guess that the first round is the hardest.  You only have the center block to go off. The second round you at least can see what someone else has done...I'm calling it inspiration!

I could be totally wrong!  But it sure feels good to bet one round under my belt!
