Patriotic Blog Hop + {GIVEAWAY!}

UPDATE: 'Atomic Bloom' Block in three (3) sizes is now available for purchase in my Craftsy Shop!

Welcome to Day 2 of the Patriotic Palette Blog Hop!  It may not be the 4th of July, but it's never too early to start the celebration!  A Blog Hop for inspiration and a Giveaway!  Woo-Hoo!

The instant I said yes to this Hop, I knew what I wanted to make!  The beginning of May I designed a paper pieced block called ATOMIC BLOOM , and this would give me a chance to play with the block, design and size for my mini quilt.

16" x 16"
Rockets Red Glare
EQ7 was invaluable for figuring out color and block placement.  The secondary design is always intriguing.  This mini quilt is a Kaleidoscope of red, white and blue...Rockets Red Glare, and gets you in a celebrating mood!

I was provided a bundle of fabric from the  Painter's Palette Solid collection and asked to kick off the celebration with a project inspired by the color palette.  If you know me, you know I love solids!  The Painter's Palette solids are amazing!  When I received my bundle, I couldn't stop touching them!  The quality and feel is just that good!

We received three (3) blue, three (3) red and one (1) white fat quarter to work with.  These I can work with!
White, Patriot, French Blue, River, Claret, Crimson and Tomato
The first step was printing templates.  If I'm doing a complicated paper piecing project, I always color my template sections to match with my fabric choice.  It makes it easier for me to keep track of things.  My quilt will have 16 blocks, each one will be 4 1/2" unfinished.

And then there is cutting all the pieces!  For this piece alone there are 304 pieces!  I figured out the size I would need for each section before I did any cutting.  Even then, I still made a cutting error!

All the parts and pieces came together pretty quickly!  There were no extra fabrics pieces or templates left over!

I added triangles to the sides and bottom of each block and trimmed all 16 squares to 4 1/2".

I stitched four (4) 4 1/2" blocks together to make one 8 1/2" block, stitched the four (4) larger blocks to finish the top.  It made it a little easier to keep things lined up...as best I could!

You know what the best part of this design and pattern to me is?  I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's the quilting.  With the shapes and lines of the block, I can quilt geometric lines with ease. It's almost like the seams are a quilting guide.

I like to plan out my quilting so that there isn't a lot of threads to bury.  I'll sit and trace my finger on a path until I'm satisfied I am making the best moves!  Is that weird?

Having the perfect thread colors to finish a perfect (perfectly finished!) project is the cherry on top for me!  I used Aurifil 50 wt in Lobster Red (2265), Delft Blue (2730) and Chalk (2026).

I couldn't decide on one color to use, so I opted to use three!  It works...it's very patriotic! It can be fun playing with bindings.  So much work goes into our quilts why not put more into bindings once in a while?  Not all quilts, and mini's are a perfect way to scratch that binding creativity itch too!

I used the lightest blue for the backing as I couldn't work it into my design.  Each and every color in the bundle has been duly represented!

The quilting detail!  I used my walking foot for this.  There was a lot of turning, but since the piece is small it still went pretty fast.  I think one day I'll attempt something like this using free motion quilting.  One day when I'm adequately relaxed so I can become one with my machine!!

In a way, these blocks in these colors remind me of bottle rockets.  When I was younger it seemed like we had hundreds and hundreds of bottle rockets.  We'd shoot them off all day and night for weeks before and after the 4th of July!  When I say we, I mean my brothers.  I was never a fan of lighting the fuse!  I was more of a sparkler kind of girl.  Drawing shapes in the dark with the sparks flying everywhere!

I had every intention of launching my 'Atomic Bloom' block pattern today, but I just couldn't pull it off!  I am working on it and hope to have the pattern available in my Craftsy Pattern Shop in the next few days.  There will be 8", 12" and 16" blocks in the pattern.

UPDATE: 'Atomic Bloom' Block in three (3) sizes is now available for purchase in my Craftsy Shop!

Needle & Foot Blog Hop Celebration + GIVEAWAY!

I was thrilled and honored when asked if I would join this Blog Hop in celebration of Needle & Foot Fine Fabrics Grand Opening!  Bernie has been feverishly filling her Etsy shop with all kinds of beauties for you and me!  And to celebrate there will be a funtastic giveaway!!

Needle & Foot Fine Fabrics on Etsy
But first, let's get down to business!  Bernie provided me with a beautiful bundle of Alison Glass' newest line of fabric 'Seventy Six'.  It's rich in color and design,

Numbered in Grasshopper, Stitched in Violet, Rising in Snow, Sunshine in
Lichen, Numbered in Peacock and Renewal in Opal.  Gorgeous right?!

Wanta Fanta 40" x 40"

I have wanted to make the 'Wanta Fanta' paper pieced block for a long time. (click the link for the free pattern)  This seemed like the perfect opportunity to do just that and showcase this gorgeous bundle.

The 'Wanta Fanta' block is perfect for a scrappy quilt.  However since I wanted to highlight the prints, I switched it up to do just that.

I used Kona Celestial for the background and backing on this little quilt.  It is almost a perfect match to the 'Numbered Peacock' blue.

The blue used to 'connect' the blocks and for the binding is Kona Capri.  Not only was it used to connect of the blocks, but it allowed me to pull another color from the prints.

Once it was all pieced together, the real fun began.  With the blocks and the fabric, I knew it was going to be quilted with geometric designs.  It turned out exactly as I had hoped it would with very little frustration!

I agree, it's a bit hard to see even on the back!  If you slightly turn your head to the left, squint with one eye and close the other...you can see it better!

I had to use 'Stitched in Violet' for the center because of its electric neon color.  It's a standout and I don't think it would have fit anywhere else!

Thank you for indulging me with my pictorial!  Now let's talk about that Giveaway!  Bernie is providing the a fabulous giveaway for one of my lucky readers!

How would you like to win Six (6) Fat Quarters or Three (3) Half Yard cuts of your choosing? I would too!

Paintbrush Studio ~ New Block Blog Hop

Welcome to the 2016 Paintbrush Studio New Block Blog Hop...and welcome to my blog!

I'm going to share my block for the event, and I encourage you to check out all the other participants from yesterday, today and tomorrow!  There promises to be some amazing blocks and always a ton of creativity!

Midnight, Daydream, White, Peach, Coral, Bordeaux
Using the Ocean Sunrise Palette, Paintbrush Studio has generously provided each participant with six fat quarters for our blocks.  The rules are simple.  Create a 12 1/2" (unfinished) block using at least three of the colors provided.

I've named my block ASCEND.  To go up, rise or move toward the sky. Much like that of a bird gliding across the water.

ASCEND
12 1/2" x 12 1/2" Unfinished
Let's start the fun!

CUTTING:

White:
4 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
16 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares

Midnight:
6 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles

Daydream:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles

Peach:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
2 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares

Coral:
2 - 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Rectangles
2 - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Squares

Step #1:
Once you have all you pieces cut, mark a diagonal line on the 16 -  2 1/2" x 2 1/2" white squares. These will be the 'sky' to the 'geese' for the Flying Geese blocks.

Step #2:
Following the diagram below for the Flying Geese Assembly, place one white (2 1/2" x 2 1/2") square on the corner of each blue (2 1/2" x 4 1/2") rectangle, stitch along the marked line, trim and press seams open.  Repeat on the opposite side to complete the Geese blocks.

You will end up with six (6) Midnight Blue and two (2) Daydream Blue units.

Step #3:
Layout your pieces following the diagram below.  Stitch each row together using 1/4" scant seam.  Press seams open.
  Step #4:
Sew each row together to complete your 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" unfinished block.

Naturally I have to give some examples of how this block would look in a completed quilt, right?! Using this exact color scheme it might look something like this:

Or maybe something like these:

Craftsy Sweetens Up My Life

How much do you love Craftsy?  I see a lot of hands raised!  From classes, to patterns, to supplies and much, much more...Craftsy has become a part of many of our Quilting lives...they truly have Sweetened my quilting life!

When I was approached about joining a Craftsy Blog Hop, it didn't take but a second to say yes!  Thank you Julie @Pink Doxies and Sandra @mmm! Quilts  for including me in this fun Blog Hop!  There will be many reviews happening this week, lots of giveaways and of course, maybe meet a new blogger you may not be familiar with!  Total WIN WIN, don't you think?

As an added bonus:  all classes reviewed on the blog hop will be 50% off!  Sweet!

So, let's get to it!  Let's talk Craftsy!!

I do a lot of tiny piecing.  Whether it's improv or paper piecing, they both have one thing in common...lots and lots of seams and rotary cutting!

There has to be a better way, a perfect solution, a time saver (and knee saver), effectively efficient!  And I found it!  A Steam Fast Mini Iron and a Folding Cutting/Pressing Mat.

Steam Fast Mini Iron
~ and ~

Omnigrid Foldaway Cutting and Ironing Mat

First, let's talk about the iron.  You wouldn't think such a tiny thing would be so mighty!  Oh, but it is!  It's light weight (under 1 pound), has a long cord (always welcome) and heats up in under a minute.  My seams and wrinkles are no match for this 'hot & steamy' travel iron.

When finger pressing is not enough, I find myself repeatedly getting up and walking to the iron board...over and over and over and over!  All for one little pressed seam!  Crazy!

I don't have the ideal sewing space, so having my 'station' compact and efficient is very important.  I need things at my fingertips and this set-up has been a life saver!

Small projects such as this paper pieced star, involves numerous seams.  You can see how crisp and clean the seams are.  Honestly, I was so impressed with this little iron from the start. I wasn't sure it would live up to my standards, but it has and then some.

There is no denying the crispness of the press!  In case you are still unsure, check out the back seams!

You can choose to use the iron with steam or without and while there isn't a 'burst' of steam button, it isn't needed at all!  The steam and the heat is enough for perfectly pressed seams every time.

The proof is in the pudding, as they say!

What about the Folding Cutting/Pressing Mat?  You can see from the previous pictures that it has all the bells and whistles needed for cutting.  The trademark yellow lines, 45 degree lines, and of course...inches!  If you don't need both sides simply fold one side under the other! With three (3) sizes available, you can pick the size that is right for you and your space.

While making this paper pieced rainbow star, it was a breeze to stand up from my machine and trim each seam.  Slice, dice and press!

This has been the perfect set-up for me at home, but it doesn't end there!  These are the perfect travel companions!  Small and compact!  Take them to your Guild meetings, sewing with friends or on a quilting retreat!  I'm happy to say both of these will be going o their first retreat next weekend!  Yes!!

All of my opinions are my own, I'm not affiliated, sponsored or being compensated for this rave review!  I couldn't be happier with both of these items.  Each one is available at Craftsy and as always, Craftsy has screamin' deals!

I hope this was helpful to you.  Before I buy anything it's important to know what I'm getting and have some honest feedback!

I know you are ready for the giveaway part!  Yes you are!

Craftsy is offering three (3) great prizes!
Amy Gibson Crown Jewels Kit,       Color Theory 6" Strips,     Color Theory 10" Square
