Blue HST Geo :: In the Bag!

Another finish!  Just when I thought I might never get to the end of quilting my stack, I made it through one more!

HST GEO LAP QUILT
51" X 67"
I don't particularly love the quilting process which is why I accumulated quite a stack that needed to be finished.  There comes a point, at least for me, that you have to do the dirty work before you can move on to the fun stuff.

The kitchen sink of straight line quilting was added to this quilt!  We've got 1" grids and 1/2" lines inside the squares and rectangles, 3/4" randomly dispersed lines throughout the quilt and some other details that brought the entire quilt together and finished!

I used two different thread colors: Aurifil 50 wt #1148 Light Jade and #2745 Midnight.

I used Kona Celestial for the binding and the squares/rectangles.  I like having the bold color as the focal point in this design.  I considered doing a scrap binding, but in the end I went with Celestial as the binding.  The dark frame seems to pull it all together to me.

I think next time I make this quilt, I'll take it down a notch with the quilting adventure!  While I love the effect of all the different lines it does take a lot of time.  I don't think the design would suffer in any way if I went with some sort of all over grid.  We'll see.  I might forget by the time I make another one!

The back of the quilt really shows graphic shapes with the darker thread.  Although it's difficult to see, you might be able to make out some of the other quilting for a better understanding of the 'kitchen sink' of straight lines.

It's no secret that in between piecing or quilting quilts I love to have a palate cleanser of sorts.  A small project to recharge my batteries.  Those kinds of projects are always so much fun and honestly, if I didn't have an 'intermission' from machine quilting I'd go stark raving mad!!  Not a pretty look I assure you!

What do you do to keep refreshed or recharged when it seems there is no end in sight with a project?!  Maybe you buckle down and get it done, get a glass of wine, or toss it aside?  All of which I have done myself!

  1. The Celestial binding really finishes it off for me, too. I like to pause to do other things - take walks, read a book... but sometimes the best motivation is a small mini mini or mini project for quick satisfaction.

    1. I fell in love with this color combination especially after the top was assembled. The purples added a little more drama and I always like that!

  3. I really like everything about this quilt! Including the variation in quilting. Take a bow!
Question: If done on a regular machine, do you still quilt from center out? Walking foot? Ruler?
If done on Longarm, no need to reply, not an option here.

  4. Your colors are always so happy! Love them! This quilt and quilting are so fun to look at. I enjoyed studying it. I HAVE to have those in-betweeners. Even now, I am working on a king size log cabin and have to take breaks and make other things to break up the sameness so I don't get bored. Having that break keeps me refreshed to keep going!

  5. Sooooo pretty! Great finish, Jayne! I take a lot of breaks and often have several projects going at once. I just pick up whichever one is either calling me the loudest, or most in my way :)

    1. I’m not one to have too many projects going at once, but I do put off quilting them and let them stack up! A quick project for me is just the right thing to break up the monotony or boredom!

  6. I love the fresh, crisp look of your quilts! I do wonder, however, if we are possibly related, since I share your thoughts on the quilting. Once I get it done, I always wonder why I wait so long. And then the next time, I do the whole thing over again. Haha.

  7. Another beauty finished, just love those colors! I think I have been going mad with all the quilting this fall. I took the afternoon off and helped DH with a project in the new camper. It felt great to not sew!!! I don't say that very often.

  12. I love this color combination. Do you know what color you used for the backing? I think I need some :)

Thanks for sharing your pretty quilt with Oh Scrap!

  13. The color combination is just beautiful especially with the dark rectangles and the binding. I also would like to know the backing color. The back quilting is also great combination. I do like it when the thread color is more visible. Another great winner. I no longer make full-size quilts. I do some charity kids quilting and improv wallhangings which is my favorite.

  16. This makes me think of Postcard from Sweden with it being all HSTs, but I just love the floating 'boxes' you have and that Celestial...might have to get me some! I also like how you distributed the yellow over the quilt, like sun shining through leaves. The quilting design was perfect and worth the extra time. Just a terrific quilt!
